Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has weighed in on the importance of player commitment ahead of the Super Eagles‘ AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.

Austin Eguavoen's Super Eagles will face the Cheetahs of Benin as guests on Thursday, 14 November, before hosting Rwanda on Monday, 18 November.

The team remains unbeaten in their opening four matches, securing three victories and a draw, and currently sit atop the Group D table with 10 points.

While acknowledging the significance of the coach’s selections, Lawal stresses that success will ultimately depend on the players’ dedication and effort on the field.

Speaking to Brila, Lawal stated that, while Eguavoen’s choices are crucial, the players must take responsibility and give their all when called upon.

“It’s not that the players are not good, but if a coach doesn’t favour a particular player, there’s little anyone can do about it.

“We had players who didn’t score regularly for their clubs, but when they came to the national team, they delivered. In football, there are always options, but the most important thing is that when you’re called upon, you must give 100% effort,” he stated.

While acknowledging that the final decision lies with the coach, Lawal highlighted that the upcoming matches won’t be easy and that the team must remain focused.

“We cannot dictate to Eguavoen who to invite; he’s the coach, and we give him the benefit of the doubt to execute.”

Lawal further stressed that player dedication is key to earning fans' support, regardless of the results.

“If they give their best, the fans will support them. It’s normal in football—you can’t win every game, but the most important thing is for the team to show their ability and commitment.”
