Several Super Eagles players were involved for their clubs in Europe’s second-tier competitions on Thursday night, Afrik-Foot reports.
From the UEFA Europa League to the UEFA Europa Conference League, Nigerian footballers produced a mix of impressive performances, important goals, and frustrating results as their teams battled in the knockout rounds.
Some enjoyed memorable nights, while others will have to fight harder in the return legs next week.
Europa League
The biggest Nigerian highlight of the night came in Germany where Terem Moffi and Zaidu Sanusi played key roles in FC Porto’s impressive 2-1 away victory over Stuttgart.

Moffi opened the scoring in the 21st minute with his first European goal for Porto. The Nigerian striker received a clever one-two pass from Borja Sainz, drove forward, and fired a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area that flew past the Stuttgart goalkeeper.
Only six minutes later, Sanusi also made his mark. The Nigerian left-back surged down the wing, found space, and delivered a precise cross into the box. Rodrigo Mora was perfectly placed to tap the ball into the net and double Porto’s lead.
Stuttgart pulled a goal back shortly before halftime through Deniz Undav, but the German side could not find an equaliser after the break. Porto defended well to secure an important away win ahead of the second leg.

The Portuguese club will now try to finish the job when Stuttgart travel to the Estádio do Dragão for the return match next week.
Elsewhere, it was a disappointing night for Ola Aina and Nottingham Forest, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to FC Midtjylland at the City Ground.
The match remained tight for most of the game before the Danish side struck late. Cho Gue-sung scored the only goal in the 80th minute, leaving Forest with work to do in the second leg in Denmark.

Young Nigerian goalkeeper Mark Nnamdi Ugboh remained on the bench throughout the match for Midtjylland.
In another Europa League tie, Tobias Lawal, a former Super Eagles invitee, started in goal for Genk as the Belgian side defeated Freiburg 1-0.
Interestingly, Freiburg’s goalkeeper Noah Atubolu is also of Nigerian descent and represents Germany at youth level. However, he could not keep a clean sheet as Zakaria El Ouahdi scored the winning goal midway through the first half.
Meanwhile, Nigerian forward Yusuf Bamidele impressed as Ferencváros secured a convincing 2-0 home win over SC Braga.

Goals from Gavriel Kanichowsky and Lenny Joseph ensured the Hungarian side took a strong advantage into the second leg and now look well placed to reach the quarter-finals.
Conference League
In the UEFA Europa Conference League, it was a quieter night for Nigerian players.
Super Eagles forward Christantus Uche was not included in Crystal Palace’s squad as the English club played out a disappointing 0-0 draw against AEK Larnaca at home.
Uche joined Palace on loan earlier in the season, but his spell in London has not gone as expected. With limited opportunities to play, the Nigerian attacker could soon return to his parent club Getafe once his loan deal ends.

Another Nigerian youngster, Prosper Obah, featured briefly for Shakhtar Donetsk. The forward came on as a late substitute during Shakhtar’s 3-1 away win against Lech Poznan.
The Ukrainian side produced a strong performance away from home and will now head into the second leg with a comfortable advantage.
All the teams involved will meet again in the second leg of their Europa League and Conference League ties on Thursday, March 19, when the remaining quarter-final spots will be decided.
