Super Eagles: Striker anoints Finidi for permanent role

Super Eagles player Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his support for Finidi George to take over as the permanent head coach of the Nigeria national team following Jose Peseiro's departure.

The Portuguese coach ended his tenure with the West African nation upon the expiration of his contract in February.

During his time in charge, he guided Nigeria to a runner-up position at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024), with Finidi serving as one of his assistants.

Finidi has been assigned temporary responsibility for the Super Eagles during March's friendlies against Ghana's Black Stars and Mali's Eagles.

The 53-year-old played a crucial role in Nigeria's recent victory over Ghana, their first in 18 years, at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Iheanacho is confident that Finidi is well-suited to lead and guide the Super Eagles moving forward.

Iheanacho praises interim Finidi impact on Super Eagles

The Leicester City man has voiced his admiration for the interim manager Finidi's impact on the team. Despite the short duration of Finidi's tenure, Iheanacho believes the coach has already made significant strides in steering the team towards success.

“The coach (Finidi) has done a great job, it’s short time for him to work with us. It’s just only him at the moment. Hopefully he will get more chance with the team,” Iheanacho expressed his perspective on Finidi's short stint at the helm.

Is Finidi deserving of the Super Eagles' job?

Finidi is among the list of coaches who have applied for the vacant Super Eagles job. However, there have been mixed reactions among the Nigerian football faithful regarding his technical prowess and competence.

While some believe he is the right man for the job, others have reservations, particularly due to their dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles' performance against Ghana, especially in the second half when Ghana played with a man down.
