Super Eagles: Two qualities behind Frankfurt’s interest in Raphael Onyedika

Published on by

Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have stepped up their pursuit of Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika by submitting an official bid to Club Brugge, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via Tribal Football, the German club have now made their move for the Nigerian international as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season.

Onyedika’s future has remained uncertain since entering the final year of his contract on July 1. The 25-year-old has reportedly decided against signing a new deal with Club Brugge and is keen to leave the Belgian champions this summer.

The midfielder joined Club Brugge in 2022 and came close to joining Turkish champions Galatasaray during the January transfer window. However, the move failed to materialize before the window closed.

With his contract due to expire next summer and no agreement over an extension, this appears to be the right time for both player and club to part ways.

Frankfurt have admired Onyedika for a long time and there are two many qualities of the Super Eagles midfielder that have convinced the Bundesliga side to make a serious move for his signature.

Super Eagles star’s work rate and ability on the ball

One of Onyedika’s biggest strengths is his tireless work rate in midfield, combined with his excellent passing ability.

The Super Eagles midfielder is highly effective at breaking up opposition attacks and providing solid protection for his defence. He is also comfortable under pressure, using his composure and ability to keep the ball to play out from tight situations.

Going forward, Onyedika is equally influential. He is capable of starting attacks with accurate forward passes, switching play with long balls and helping his team move quickly in transition. His passing accuracy and ability to progress with the ball makes him one of the standout midfielders in his position.

The Bundesliga is known for its fast-paced football and Onyedika’s qualities fit that style perfectly. His ability to win possession and quickly release attacking players is one of the main reasons Frankfurt believe he would thrive in Germany.

A long term option in midfield

At 25, Onyedika is entering the prime years of his career, making him an attractive long-term option for Frankfurt.

The Super Eagles star would be expected to compete for regular playing time immediately, while also becoming an important part of the club’s midfield for years to come.

Frankfurt are looking to build a squad capable of returning to European competition after narrowly missing out by finishing eighth in the Bundesliga during the 2025-26 season. Onyedika’s age and room for development makes him an ideal player to help lead that rebuild.

The German club have already submitted their opening offer, putting themselves ahead of several other interested clubs.

If an agreement can be reached with Club Brugge, the Bundesliga side could complete the signing of the Super Eagles midfielder, which would see him become Nigeria’s first player at the club since the legendary Austin Okocha.
