Super Eagles’ number-one GK role: Okoye challenges Nwabali after becoming Serie A’s best

Published on by

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has made it clear he wants more opportunities with the Super Eagles, Afrik-Foot reports.

The former Watford shot-stopper’s latest comments will feel like a direct challenge to current Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Okoye recently returned to the Nigeria squad during the March international window after missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

His comeback included involvement in a 2-1 friendly win over Iran in Antalya, although injury prevented him from featuring in the subsequent 2-2 draw against Jordan.

Despite that setback, Okoye’s focus remains firmly on re-establishing himself as a regular in the national team.

“I was so pleased to be called up to the national team,” he said on Udinese Tonight, via the club’s official website.

“It’s important to me as a player and as a person. I want to return many more times.”

With 19 caps since making his debut against Brazil in 2019, Okoye is no stranger to international football, but he now finds himself in a competitive battle for the number-one shirt.

Nwabali has held that role in recent months, but his uncertain club situation could open the door. Okoye, by contrast, is building momentum in one of Europe’s toughest leagues. His recent performances suggest he is ready not just to return, but to compete seriously for the starting position.

Okoye: Super Eagles GK confirmed as Serie A’s best

Okoye’s push for international recognition has been strengthened by his excellent club form with Udinese Calcio.

The 26-year-old delivered one of his best performances of the season in a stunning 3-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro. Facing a side that had won the last four meetings between the teams, Udinese were clear underdogs, but Okoye proved decisive.

Milan managed 20 attempts on goal, yet only three were on target, all of which were comfortably handled by the Nigerian goalkeeper. One of his saves in particular drew praise as it highlighted his sharp reflexes. It also capped a significant personal milestone. Okoye has now recorded three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since joining Udinese in 2023.

That performance helped him secure a place in the Serie A Team of the Week for matchday 32, a recognition reserved for the league’s standout players.

Okoye’s season numbers further reinforce his impact, with eight clean sheets in 24 league appearances so far.

The Nigeria international was not the only Udinese player recognised, with teammates Arthur Atta and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp also included in the weekly selection. Other notable names across the league made the cut, but it was the Nigerian goalkeeper’s calm and commanding display that stood out.

Okoye will look to continue his brilliant form when Udinese host Parma on Saturday.
