‘Super Eagles icon was more consistent than Lukaku’ – Former Congo international hails Black Country impact

Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has been named by Youssouf Mulumbu as the player who impressed him most during his time at West Bromwich Albion, ahead of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.

Mulumbu, who spent six seasons at The Hawthorns, said Odemwingie’s consistency and impact stood out during their time together in the Premier League. “I’d vote for Peter Odemwingie in first place and Romelu Lukaku in second,” the Congolese midfielder said.

“Odemwingie… had a phenomenal season, keeping us in the Premier League in his first season, with 17 goals. We knew him from Lille, where he was capable of moments of brilliance. He impressed us a lot. He was consistently good throughout. He really stood out to me that season.”

Where is former Super Eagles star Peter Odemwingie now?

Odemwingie joined West Brom from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2010 and quickly became one of the club’s most influential players. The Nigerian scored 15 league goals in his debut season and 30 in total during his three years at the club.

His goals helped keep West Brom in the Premier League and made him a firm fan favourite at The Hawthorns, and since retiring from football, he has switched careers to compete professionally in golf on the PGA circuit.

The former Nigeria international represented the Super Eagles 64 times, scoring 11 goals and featuring at two FIFA World Cups.

Lukaku, on the other hand, spent the 2012/13 season on loan at West Brom, where he scored 17 league goals before returning to Chelsea. The 32-year-old now plays for Napoli, with whom he won the Serie A title during the 2024/25 season. He remains Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 89 international goals.
