Super Eagles: Does Iheanacho’s statement hint at Celtic contract renewal?

Published on by

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho could be close to making a final decision on his future at Celtic, potentially bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty, Afrik-Foot reports.

Iheanacho’s future has been in doubt over the past few weeks, with his contract at Celtic set to expire at the end of the month. It had initially appeared that he would be leaving, as there were no reports of extension talks at the time.

The 29-year-old joined the Hoops on a free transfer last summer, signing a one-year deal with an option to extend for an additional year. Despite injury setbacks during the season, he still enjoyed a positive campaign, helping them win the domestic double.

While he started the season strongly, injuries disrupted his momentum and raised doubts about whether he would remain at the club beyond this season. At one point, it looked like his time in Glasgow could end after just one year.

However, a strong resurgence late into the season changed the picture. Iheanacho scored six goals in his final nine matches and became a key figure in Celtic’s push for success.

He scored twice in the Scottish Cup semifinal win over St Mirren and also netted a brilliant solo goal in the final. His strike in the 3-2 win over Motherwell also played a crucial role in the league title race, before Celtic edged Hearts on the final day to complete a domestic double.

Iheanacho’s statement fuels Celtic contract speculation

According to The Scottish Sun, Kelechi Iheanacho could now be close to agreeing a contract extension at Celtic this summer, potentially extending his stay for another season.

The Super Eagles forward’s future had been uncertain up until now, but his recent social media post has fuelled speculation. The 29-year-old posted a Celtic team photo with the caption “My Team”, which many believe could be a strong hint that he is set to stay.

There had previously been suggestions that he could leave, especially with his contract nearing its end and no clear confirmation of a renewal.

Meanwhile, Celtic have also been exploring attacking reinforcements and had been linked with a move for Swiss forward Elias Filet from FC Aarau. This moved raised doubts about Iheanacho’s future, especially as it would make him become surplus to requirements if a new striker was signed.

What does this mean for the Super Eagles star?

It initially looked like Iheanacho’s spell at Celtic would end after just one season, particularly after the injury struggles he faced earlier in the campaign.

When he joined from Sevilla last summer, the move was seen as a chance to revive his career after a difficult spell in Spain. Although his start at Celtic was slow, he eventually fought his way back into form and re-established himself as an important player.

Now, his latest comments could be a strong hint suggesting that he could be close to signing an extension at the Scottish champions.

Iheanacho will be hoping for a strong pre-season to reach full fitness, after missing parts of last campaign. If he does extend his stay, he will be hoping to build on his momentum and enjoy another successful trophy-winning season with Celtic.

At the moment, an extension appears increasingly likely, with a final decision on his future expected in the coming days.
