Super Eagles update: Former Inter Milan target ruled out of Jordan clash in big blow for Chelle

Published on by

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has suffered a significant blow ahead of Nigeria’s friendly against Jordan on Tuesday, Afrik-Foot reports.

After defeating Iran 2-1 in the first match of their March international window, the Super Eagles are set to take on Al-Nashama at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya.

In the opening game, coach Chelle was missing several key players, including Ola Aina, Victor Osimhen, Stanley Nwabali, and Calvin Bassey. Despite these absences, the squad members who stepped in performed quite well to secure the win.

However, the team has faced more departures since then. Semi Ajayi was forced to leave the camp after sustaining an injury, while Bruno Onyemaechi left to join his partner, who just gave birth to their first child.

The challenges have continued ahead of the Jordan clash, as Chelle has suffered another setback. Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has officially pulled out of the squad after picking up a thigh knock. This was relayed through the Super Eagles media team on Monday Afternoon.

This situation is a major blow for Chelle, who was already without his first-choice goalkeeper, Nwabali.

Okoye performed really well against Iran in the opening match. His performance was a testament to his immense improvement over the past two year—progress that has even saw him linked with a high-profile transfer to Serie A giants Inter Milan in 2024.

Super Eagles Play Jordan: Who Replace’s Maduka Okoye?

With Okoye exiting the camp, the only goalkeepers remaining are Adebayo Adeleye and Francis Uzoho. Consequently, Uzoho will likely get the nod to start between the sticks against Jordan.

Uzoho was previously Nigeria’s undisputed first choice, but he began losing his spot due to inconsistent performances in goal.

However, the 27-year-old Omonia shot-stopper should still be capable of delivering a solid performance. He played well in his only appearance against Uganda during AFCON 2025. Moreover, the stakes are relatively low, as this remains a friendly fixture, so he shouldn’t be under any pressure.

Meanwhile, Okoye will be focused on returning to full fitness. According to the Super Eagles media team, he sustained a thigh knock, suggesting he may only require a few days of rest to recover at his club Udinese.

Despite Okoye’s absence, Nigeria should still have enough quality to secure a victory over Jordan.
