In the aftermath of the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the Nigerian football community finds itself embroiled in a saga of delayed payments and unmet promises for the umpteenth time.
Despite the Federal Government's allocation of funds to cover the Super Eagles' incentives and allowances for the AFCON campaign and to clear all outstanding debts, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to clear the backlog, citing administrative concerns that could be linked to the government’s financial institution – the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Following their participation in the prestigious continental tournament, where the Super Eagles faced formidable opponents and showcased their talent on the international stage, expectations were high for timely payment of incentives and allowances.
However, days after the conclusion of the tournament, the players remain in limbo, awaiting the fulfilment of promises made by the authorities.

NFF responds to Super Eagles bonus row
A few weeks before the start of the tournament in Ivory Coast, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu issued a directive to release funds amounting to about N12 billion to settle outstanding bonuses, allowances, and salary arrears for various national teams, including the Super Eagles.
That had raised the hopes of financial relief for the players. Yet, despite the assurance of timely payments before the start of AFCON, the reality paints a starkly different picture.
The delay in disbursement has left the Super Eagles players frustrated and questioning the integrity of the promises made by the government.
In particular, the players are entitled to a $5,000 bonus for each participant in addition to a $200 daily camp allowance.
Furthermore, they were promised payouts of $12,500 each for their two wins and draw in the group stage, reflecting the significant financial stakes involved.
The unresolved issue of outstanding payments has cast a shadow over the achievements of the Super Eagles during the AFCON campaign, threatening to tarnish the spirit of unity and camaraderie that characterized their efforts on the field.
Afrik-foot can confirm that some bonuses, including camp allowances, were received by the players in Ivory Coast during the AFCON.

NFF vows to resolve Super Eagles bonus row
Despite assurances from the NFF and government officials, the players remain sceptical about the likelihood of receiving their dues promptly.
The revelation that the NFF intends to clear the outstanding payments only after receiving funds from their previous sponsor, Aiteo, has further fueled doubts and uncertainty among the players.
Afrik-foot contacted an official of the football federation for a comment on the matter.
“There are processes for money to be released, and then dispersed. I strongly believe,” said the official who pleaded anonymity.
As the Nigerian football community grapples with the fallout from the delayed payments, questions are being raised about the transparency and accountability of financial management within the sport.
The need for timely and transparent disbursement of funds is paramount to maintaining the integrity and credibility of Nigerian football on the international stage.
As the Super Eagles await resolution on the issue of outstanding incentives and allowances, they are reminded of the challenges they face both on and off the pitch.
The resolution of this saga will not only impact the players' financial well-being but also shape perceptions of Nigerian football and its commitment to upholding the welfare of its athletes.
