The Super Eagles’ route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has suddenly narrowed after Guinea-Bissau’s 3-0 demolition left Nigeria three points behind the Group L leaders after two matches, Afrik-Foot reports.

Guinea-Bissau have collected six points from six, while Nigeria’s Super Eagles have three. Madagascar and Tanzania both have one point after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw, although Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the finals as co-hosts. Only the highest-ranked non-host nation in Group L will qualify, turning every remaining Nigerian fixture into a high-stakes contest.

Nigeria now have three matches that could shape the entire campaign: two meetings with Tanzania in November and a final home clash with Guinea-Bissau in March.

1. Nigeria’s Super Eagles vs Tanzania

The first pressure point arrives in November when Nigeria host Tanzania in Matchday 3.

The Taifa Stars have taken only one point from their opening two games, drawing 1-1 with Madagascar after losing 2-0 to Guinea-Bissau. Their automatic qualification removes the pressure of chasing a finals place, but their results can still dramatically reshape the battle between Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar.

Three points in Nigeria would give Eric Chelle’s side the platform needed to repair the damage suffered in Bissau.

2. Tanzania vs Nigeria’s Super Eagles

The return fixture comes only days later, creating an unusual two-match test against the same opponent.

The Super Eagles’ challenge will be to turn the November double-header into a points haul rather than another stumble. CAF has scheduled Matchdays 3 and 4 for the 9-17 November international window, with Nigeria facing Tanzania home and away before the qualifying campaign moves into its final phase.

Dropping points across either game would give Guinea-Bissau greater room at the top and keep Madagascar within striking distance.

3. Nigeria vs Guinea-Bissau

The final showdown comes on 28 March 2027, when Guinea-Bissau travel to Nigeria for the reverse fixture.

By then, the Djurtus could have built a commanding position after starting with six points and a +5 goal difference. The Super Eagles, meanwhile, will have only that March fixture against the Wild Dogs left to settle their fate.

The Bissau defeat therefore does not decide Nigeria’s campaign, but it has made the remaining road far less forgiving. The Super Eagles now need their November meetings with Tanzania to produce a strong response before the March return against Guinea-Bissau potentially becomes the defining night of Group L.
