Super Eagles: 5 talking points from Nigeria’s loss to Portugal – Ronaldo’s misses, Chelle’s magic

Published on by

Super Eagles’ 12-match unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday night as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory in an international friendly at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Afrik-Foot reports.

The match served as Portugal’s final preparation before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while it gave Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle another opportunity to test his side against a European heavyweight.

Pedro Neto gave the hosts the lead in the 23rd minute before Akor Adams equalised for Nigeria 14 minutes later. Francisco Conceição eventually settled the contest in the 74th minute after a wave of Portuguese substitutions changed the flow of the game.

Despite having only 38 per cent possession and managing five shots compared to Portugal’s 13, Nigeria competed strongly throughout the contest and left many fans encouraged by the team’s progress under Chelle.

Super Eagles vs Portugal: The main talking points

Ronaldo’s wasteful night steals the headlines

All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo before kick-off, but the Portuguese captain endured a frustrating evening in front of goal.

The veteran striker should have opened the scoring early when Nélson Semedo found him unmarked inside the box. Instead, Ronaldo sent his effort wide of the target, leaving the home crowd stunned.

He also came close from a Bruno Fernandes corner but directed his header narrowly over the crossbar. He also blasted over when found unmarked in the box early in the second half.

Although Portugal eventually won, Ronaldo’s inability to convert clear chances could raise concerns about his role in Roberto Martínez’s attack ahead of what is expected to be his sixth World Cup appearance. His night ended in the 64th minute when he was replaced by Gonçalo Ramos.

Iwobi joins Nigeria’s elite centurions

The defeat could not take away a special personal achievement for Alex Iwobi. The Fulham midfielder earned his 100th appearance for Nigeria, becoming only the fourth player in Super Eagles history to reach the landmark.

Iwobi joined an exclusive group that includes Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.

Since making his debut against DR Congo in 2015, the midfielder has remained one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers. His century of caps pointed to a decade of service to the national team and cemented his place among the country’s modern greats.

Martínez used the match as a World Cup dress rehearsal

Portugal boss Roberto Martínez treated the game as more than a friendly. Knowing the World Cup is only days away, the Spaniard experimented with personnel and tactical combinations throughout the contest.

Vitinha, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes started in midfield, helping Portugal dominate possession and control the tempo.

However, the biggest move came after the break when Martínez introduced a series of fresh legs, making widespread changes across the pitch.

The substitutions eventually proved decisive. João Cancelo created the winning goal and Francisco Conceição supplied the finish as Portugal’s squad depth made the difference late on.

Chelle’s tactical plan troubled Portugal for long periods

Although Nigeria lost, Eric Chelle’s approach once again attracted praise. The Super Eagles sat compactly without the ball and focused on closing central spaces where Vitinha, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes usually operate.

Wilfred Ndidi, Tochukwu Nnadi and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru worked tirelessly to disrupt Portugal’s passing rhythm and force the hosts into wider areas.

Nigeria’s equaliser perfectly reflected Chelle’s game plan. A quick transition exposed uncertainty in Portugal’s defence, and Dele-Bashiru immediately released Akor Adams with a precise pass. The striker stayed calm and finished expertly into the far corner in the 37th minute.

For much of the match, Portugal struggled to create clear openings through the middle, showing how effective Nigeria’s organisation was.

Fans remain convinced Chelle is the right man

The result ended Nigeria’s unbeaten streak, but many supporters came away more convinced than ever that Chelle is building something special.

Since taking charge in January 2025, the Franco-Malian coach has transformed the mood around the national team. The Super Eagles now play with greater structure, discipline and tactical clarity.

Against a World Cup-bound Portugal side packed with elite players, Nigeria never looked overwhelmed. Even when Portugal increased the pressure after halftime, the Super Eagles remained competitive and organised. Supporters have repeatedly praised the visible identity Chelle has introduced, while several players have publicly backed his methods.

As attention gradually turns to future tournaments, including the 2027 AFCON campaign, calls for the Nigeria Football Federation to secure Chelle’s long-term future are only growing louder.

While Portugal celebrated victory in Leiria, Nigeria left with something equally valuable: further evidence that Chelle’s project is moving in the right direction.
