Live – Portugal vs Nigeria: Follow scores & key updates as Super Eagles face Ronaldo’s side

Published on by

Three-time African champions Super Eagles of Nigeria take on former European Championship winners Portugal in this highly anticipated international friendly match, Afrik-Foot reports.

It is Portugal’s final preparatory match before the Selecao head to the 2026 World Cup where they will first tackle Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria, meanwhile, did not qualify for the World Cup and are only building up to the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which begin in September.

Fifth-ranked Portugal are the favourites to secure their second win over Nigeria, after claiming a 4-0 victory in the first ever meeting between the two nations four years ago.

Only four members of the Nigerian squad that lost 4-0 to the Selecao in 2022 are in the starting lineup for this game – Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Wilfred Ndidi.

The Super Eagles are also in a better frame of mind, having lost none of their last 20 odd games in regulation time under Eric Chelle.

Nigeria have won three and drew two of their five friendly games in 2026, with the victories coming against Jordan, Zimbabwe and Jamaica. Draws against Iran and Poland have sandwiched those results, with none of those teams able to stop Nigeria from scoring. Interestingly, the Super Eagles have scored two or more goals in each of those matches and will have their moments in attack against Portugal.

Despite missing the talents of key men Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Franco-Malian tactician Chelle will be positive his new-look Eagles can pose a few problems to Portugal.

Portugal, though, pose a more terrible danger in front of a partisan home support and with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Chelsea’s Neto in attack, the Selecao will be a handful for Nigeria to handle.
