Super Eagles: 3 reasons Nwabali leads Okonkwo in goalkeeping race

Published on by

The Super Eagles face Russia in an international friendly on Tuesday as they look to bounce back from their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their last outing, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria suffered a major setback in their second qualifying game for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations when they were beaten 3-0 by the Djurtus.

The defeat was Nigeria’s heaviest in an AFCON qualifier and left Eric Chelle’s side needing a response when they take on Russia.

The Super Eagles will be hoping to return to winning ways against the European side and claim their first win over Russia after both teams played out a 1-1 draw in their previous meeting in 2025.

Stanley Nwabali started both of Nigeria’s qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, although his performances in both games attracted some criticism.

The Chippa United goalkeeper could therefore face competition for his place going forward, especially with Arthur Okonkwo also in the squad.

Okonkwo switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria earlier this year, adding another option to the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department.

However, there are still some reasons why Nwabali currently leads Okonkwo in the race to be Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Why Nwabali is still ahead of Okonkwo in the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping race

1. Nwabali has more experience

One major advantage Nwabali has over Okonkwo is experience. Nwabali made his Super Eagles debut in 2021 and became Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 AFCON, with his performances helping him establish himself in the position.

Since then, he has remained the preferred option for the national team, although he briefly lost his place earlier this year after being without a club. Okonkwo was one of the goalkeepers who came into the picture during that period and impressed during the Unity Cup.

The Arsenal academy product kept clean sheets in both games as Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe and Jamaica to win the tournament.

The quality of those opponents was different from what Nwabali has faced in competitive international football, but Okonkwo’s performances showed that he can compete for the position.

However, Nwabali’s longer experience with the Super Eagles gives him an advantage. He has played more important matches for Nigeria and understands the demands that come with being the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, which could help him remain ahead of Okonkwo in Chelle’s plans.

2. Nwabali has more big-game experience

Another area where Nwabali has an edge is his experience in top matches. The Chippa United goalkeeper has shown over time that he can perform when the pressure is high, especially during his impressive run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nwabali was also important in Nigeria’s third-place play-off victory at the 2025 AFCON, where he produced a strong performance in the penalty shootout against Egypt.

He saved spot-kicks from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush as Nigeria eventually secured the bronze medal.

Those moments have given Nwabali valuable experience in dealing with pressure at international level. Okonkwo, meanwhile, has not had as many opportunities to play in major matches for the Super Eagles.

His clean-sheet performances during the Unity Cup were encouraging, but Nwabali has been tested more often in competitive games and major tournaments.

That experience could give Nwabali an advantage when Chelle has to make a decision over who starts in goal.

3. Nwabali is more familiar with the Super Eagles backline

Nwabali also has an advantage because of his familiarity with the players in front of him.

Having been the Super Eagles’ regular goalkeeper for some time, he has played alongside several of Nigeria’s defenders and understands how they operate.

That familiarity can be important for a goalkeeper, especially when it comes to communication, positioning and organising the defence during difficult moments.

Okonkwo is still trying to build that relationship with the players around him.

Although he has already shown that he can perform when given the opportunity, he does not yet have the same level of experience playing regularly behind the Super Eagles’ defence.
