Russia vs Nigeria takes centre stage again as the European and African giants lock horns in an international friendly for the second time in 16 months, Afrik-Foot reports.
Kelechi Iheanacho has not kicked a ball for Nigeria since the 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica, but the striker’s return to the Super Eagles squad is no mere nostalgia pick.
The forward has scored in each of his first eight TFF 1. Lig appearances for Bursaspor this season, striking 11 goals and adding two assists since leaving Celtic as a free agent in the summer.
That run, capped by a brace in a come-from-behind win over Batman Petrolspor, forced Eric Chelle’s hand and earned Iheanacho a recall for Tuesday’s international friendly against Russia in Nizhny Novgorod.
The fixture itself arrives stripped of much of its glamour. The match falls outside of FIFA’s official oversight as Russia remains banned from international football following their aggression in the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Several of Nigeria’s Europe-based regulars, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Frank Onyeka, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi and Bright Osayi-Samuel are not available for the encounter.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen remains sidelined by the adductor strain that has already cost him three Galatasaray matches and both of Nigeria’s opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The late withdrawals of captain Wilfred Ndidi and uncapped defender Victory Akpe have also forced two further changes to the squad in the past two days.
Russia have their own gaps to fill, with captain Aleksandr Golovin and goalkeeper Matvey Safonov both out of the squad, but Valeri Karpin’s side arrive on the back of a six-nil rout of Namibia and will start this rematch of last year’s one-one draw as clear favourites.

Russia vs Nigeria form and context: Russia flying, Super Eagles reeling
Russia have won four of their last five matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding just once across that run. The sequence reads a six-nil demolition of Namibia on October 3, a two-nil win over Iran in Kazan on September 29, a three-nil victory against Trinidad and Tobago on June 9, a three-nil win over Burkina Faso on June 5, and a one-nil defeat away at Egypt on May 28.
Karpin’s side have not faced opposition ranked inside FIFA’s top 30 since that Egypt trip, and Nigeria, ranked 26th in the world to Russia’s 35th, will offer a sterner on-paper test than Namibia managed.
Nigeria’s recent form tells a more complicated story. Chelle’s side beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in London on May 26, drew 2-2 away at Poland on June 3, lost 1-2 away at Portugal on June 10, then opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before collapsing to a three-nil defeat away at Guinea-Bissau four days later.
That loss leaves Nigeria on three points from two matches in Qualifying Group L, with Guinea-Bissau above them on goal difference alone.
The Russia friendly was always scheduled as a chance to regroup between qualifiers. It has instead become a squad rebuilding exercise, forced by a wave of withdrawals inside three weeks.

Russia vs Nigeria head-to-head: One meeting, one own goal
Tuesday’s match is only the second senior meeting between the two countries. The first, played at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025, finished one-all.
Russia led at half time after Semi Ajayi turned a Viktor Melekhin cross into his own net in the 27th minute, before substitute Tolu Arokodare equalised in the 71st minute to earn Nigeria a point.
Ajayi is among the eight Nigeria players unavailable this time, and Arokodare was not named in the Super Eagles’ squad for this friendly either, so neither side can call directly on the players who settled the only previous meeting between them.
Russia vs Nigeria team news: Super Eagles’ mounting absentee list
Chelle’s team news has shifted by the day. Ndidi’s withdrawal removes the player many expected to wear the captain’s armband, with Reims midfielder John Otomewo, uncapped and signed from Hapoel Jerusalem in July, drafted in as cover.
Victory Akpe, the towering Basel centre back tipped as a long-term defensive prospect, also pulled out, with Vince Osuji handed a first call-up in his place. Osimhen remains out, Mubarak Suleiman is a doubt after a knock, and the absentee list leaves Chelle short of recognised full backs and wingers.
Russia, by contrast, are missing only Golovin and a trio of injuries, with Karpin expected to recall several starters rested for Saturday’s Namibia rout.

Iheanacho vs Miranchuk: Russia vs Nigeria star player comparison
If the Super Eagles are to cause an upset in this Russia vs Nigeria faceoff, Iheanacho is the most dangerous attacker on the pitch. His scoring streak at Bursaspor is the sharpest form of anyone involved in Tuesday’s match, and he arrives with the freedom of a player who has nothing to lose after such a long absence from the Super Eagles set-up.
Russia’s standout is Aleksey Miranchuk, the Atlanta United right winger who has contributed five goals and six assists in 19 Major League Soccer appearances this season and remains the senior figure in a squad missing several of its more recognised names.

The managers: Karpin vs Chelle
Valeri Karpin, Russia’s head coach, has overseen a 66 per cent win rate across 38 matches since taking permanent charge of Russia, a record built almost entirely on friendlies given the team’s continued suspension from FIFA and UEFA competitions.
Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, who guided Nigeria to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, has a 58 per cent win rate from 31 matches in charge, but his position has come under scrutiny since the Guinea-Bissau defeat, and this depleted squad gives him little room to settle on a system before November’s qualifiers against Tanzania.
Russia vs Nigeria tactical preview
Karpin is expected to set his side up in a 4-2-3-1, built around the holding pair of Artem Karpukas and Nail Umyarov shielding a back four with limited continental experience between them. Miranchuk, Danil Prutsev and Lechii Sadulaev should combine behind Aleksandr Sobolev, who led the line in the win over Namibia.
Nigeria’s makeshift back four, marshalled by Emmanuel Fernandez and the uncapped Vince Osuji, will be tested by that movement, particularly with first-choice full backs Aina and Onyemaechi both unavailable.

Chelle is likely to set up in a 4-3-3, with Otomewo screening the back four and Moses Simon stretching play down the left to create room for Iheanacho and Akor Adams through the middle.
Nigeria’s best route to goal may come from catching Russia’s inexperienced back line out of position, rather than from sustained control of a midfield built around two players, Karpukas and Umyarov, who have started together in each of Russia’s last five matches.
Russia vs Nigeria score prediction
Expect Russia’s greater continuity to show through in the final third. Karpin’s side have scored freely against modest opposition all year and should carry enough quality to unsettle a Nigeria defence likely to feature the uncapped Osuji at centre back.
Iheanacho’s movement gives Nigeria a route back into the game, and given his scoring streak in Turkey, do not rule out a goal on his return.
| 🔮 Russia 2 – 1 Nigeria |
| Russia’s settled attack and extra continuity should edge a patched-together Nigeria side. Likely scorers: Aleksandr Sobolev (Russia), Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria). |
