Super Eagles: ‘Generational’ Osimhen tipped to lead Galatasaray charge for Super Lig title

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been described as a “generational” figure capable of powering Galatasaray to another Super Lig crown following his decisive performance in the Istanbul derby, Afrik Foot reports.

The Nigerian forward was on the scoresheet in Galatasaray’s emphatic 3-0 victory over arch-rivals Fenerbahçe at RAMS Park over the weekend. This result catapulted them seven points clear at the top of the Turkish Super Lig.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu, who previously featured in Turkey during his playing days, believes Osimhen’s mentality and big-game pedigree set him apart at a crucial stage of the season.

Super Eagles: Ike Shorunmu describes Osimhen as Generational

The Istanbul derby is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally charged derbies in football, and Sunday’s clash was no exception.

Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 40th minute with a close-range finish, before gifting a penalty to Baris Asper Yilmaz, who added a second.

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira sealed the result late on, but it was Osimhen’s opener that defined the contest.

Shorunmu likened the derby to a “war,” stressing that the psychological demands can overwhelm even experienced players.

According to the 34-cap Super Eagles goalkeeper, Fenerbahçe attempted to unsettle Osimhen before kickoff by lodging a petition questioning the legality of the protective bandage on his forearm.

Rather than distract him, however, the move appeared to sharpen his focus.

“The Fenerbahçe team and their fans did a lot to distract the ‘main man’ of Galatasaray, Victor Osimhen,” Shorunmu said in an interview with Footy Africa.

“They knew he would put them under a lot of pressure, and at the end of the day, his goal counted. He survived the pressure and took his chances.

“He’s just unplayable when at his best; Galatasaray are lucky to have him,” the 58-year-old added.

Osimhen’s impact has reignited debate among Galatasaray supporters over where he ranks among the club’s greatest imports.

Inevitably, comparisons have surfaced with Romanian icon Gheorghe Hagi, long considered one of the most influential overseas players in Turkish football history, having won two European trophies and lifted the league titles four times with the Cim Bom Aslan.

Shorunmu, who faced Hagi during his time in Turkey, urged caution while acknowledging Osimhen’s extraordinary influence.

“It’s a generational discussion,” he explained.

“Every era has its hero. Hagi was phenomenal in his time. Now Osimhen is in that circle. He’s a star, but he must manage this period well and keep delivering.”

Osimhen has registered 20 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season, and those numbers have kept Barcelona and Real Madrid lurking in the corners ahead of the summer transfer window.

Off the pitch, though, the 27-year-old has some questions to answer after Mercedes-Benz filed a lawsuit against him.
