Super Eagles news: 4 shocking records Nigeria set in 3-0 Guinea-Bissau defeat

Nigeria Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau was a costly setback in the race for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Afrik-Foot reports.

It was also a night that pushed the Super Eagles into territory they had not visited for decades, while exposing the scale of their collapse in Bissau.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Mama Baldé struck again after the break and Álvaro Djaló’s stoppage-time goal turned a difficult evening into one of the darkest results of Nigeria’s recent competitive history.

The damage goes beyond the three points surrendered at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro. Nigeria had arrived with Eric Chelle yet to suffer a competitive defeat in regulation time as Super Eagles coach, while Guinea-Bissau had never beaten the West African giants by more than a single goal. By the final whistle, both records had disappeared, alongside another piece of Nigerian football history that had stood since the 1990s.

Super Eagles’ heaviest competitive defeat to an African opponent in 36 years

Franculino Djú struck in the 15th minute, Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s lead in the 66th and Álvaro Djaló completed the rout in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The 3-0 scoreline is Nigeria’s first defeat by three clear goals against an African opponent in a competitive match since Algeria demolished the Super Eagles 5-1 at the 1990 AFCON in Algiers.

That infamous match on March 2, 1990, saw Rabah Madjer score twice, Djamel Menad add two more and Djamel Amani complete Algeria’s rout. Emmanuel “Emma” Okocha, the older brother of legendary midfielder Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, scored Nigeria’s lone consolation goal.

Nigeria’s heaviest AFCON qualifying defeat ever

The Bissau loss has also rewritten an unwanted page in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying record.

Before Tuesday, the Super Eagles had suffered damaging defeats in qualifying, including a 3-2 home loss to Congo in 2014 that contributed to Nigeria missing the 2015 tournament. None had been by three goals.

Guinea-Bissau changed that with a three-goal victory that now stands alone as Nigeria’s heaviest defeat in AFCON qualifying.

Chelle’s competitive unbeaten run is over

The defeat ended Eric Chelle’s unbeaten record in competitive matches in regulation time since he took charge of Nigeria in January 2025.

His previous competitive setbacks had not come inside 90 minutes. Nigeria drew 1-1 with DR Congo after extra time before losing the 2026 World Cup African play-off final on penalties. The Super Eagles loss to Morocco in the semi-final of the 2025 AFCON was also via shootouts.

Guinea-Bissau therefore delivered Chelle his first competitive loss inside normal time.

Guinea-Bissau’s biggest win over Nigeria

The Djurtus had beaten Nigeria once, a 1-0 win in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. That singular victory over the Super Eagles never came close to Tuesday’s margin.

Nigeria had won three of the previous four senior meetings, including a 2-0 AFCON victory in 2022 and successive 1-0 wins in 2023 and 2024.

The 3-0 victory in Bissau is therefore Guinea-Bissau’s first multi-goal win over Nigeria and their largest victory in the fixture’s history.

Nigeria now have three points from two Group L matches, while Guinea-Bissau have six after consecutive victories over Tanzania and the Super Eagles.
