Super Eagles star suffers fresh injury setback in Germany, doubt for March games

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu is set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering an adductor injury, Afrik-Foot reports.

This season has been particularly grueling for Agu. Last October, he sustained an ankle injury that kept him out of action until the beginning of February.

That long-term setback proved costly, as it forced him to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.

Upon his return earlier this month, it was expected that he would capitalize on his recovery and reclaim a regular spot in Werder Bremen’s starting eleven.

He featured in the club’s first two fixtures of the month against Freiburg and Bayern Munich, showing flashes of the form that made him a fan favorite.

He was also billed to start for his side against St. Pauli in the Bundesliga last weekend; however, he suffered an injury during the warm-up and was ruled out of the clash.

According to DeichStube, subsequent examinations confirmed an adductor problem for the 26-year-old left-back. This is a significant blow for Werder Bremen, as coach Daniel Thioune views Agu’s pace and defensive versatility as vital components of his tactical setup.

An adductor injury typically occurs around the groin area. Depending on the severity — ranging from mild to moderate — recovery usually takes between one and six weeks.

Luckily, initial reports suggest Agu’s case is not overly severe, meaning he might avoid a prolonged absence.

Considering he missed the 2025 AFCON, Agu will be incredibly eager to return to the international fold. He could potentially make the squad if he attains full match fitness before the international break at the end of March.

However, Werder Bremen are expected to be cautious with the former Osnabrück man to prevent a recurrence or a secondary injury.

On the international front, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle remains well-covered at left-back, with Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi both fit and available for selection.
