Super Eagles hopeful Tim Iroegbunam joins Semi Ajayi at Hull City: What happens next?

Tim Iroegbunam has taken another important step in his career, and it could also bring him closer to the Super Eagles, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 23-year-old midfielder has joined newly promoted Premier League side Hull City from Everton on a five-year contract that runs until the summer of 2031. Hull announced the deal after the transfer window closed on September 1.

Iroegbunam arrives with 60 Premier League appearances behind him, including 48 for Everton and 12 for Aston Villa. He now has the chance to build on that experience at a club that wants him to play an important role in its return to English football’s top level.

“I’m very happy. From the first moment I heard about the opportunity to come and join this club, I was excited. Now, it’s finally done. It’s taken a long time but I’m excited to get started,” Iroegbunam told Hull’s official website.

A Nigerian connection at Hull

The move also gives Iroegbunam a familiar face in the dressing room.

He will play alongside Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi, who joined Hull in 2025 after six seasons at West Bromwich Albion. Ajayi has already established himself as an experienced Nigeria international, with 48 appearances for the three-time African champions.

David Akintola also gives Hull another Nigeria connection. The winger joined the Tigers in 2025 and is under contract until June 2027.

That makes Iroegbunam, Ajayi and Akintola three players with Nigeria links in Hull’s Premier League squad. Ajayi has not be personally commissioned to persuade Iroegbunam to choose Nigeria over England. But having an established Super Eagles player beside him could be valuable if Iroegbunam begins serious talks about his international future.

Iroegbunam: Why Nigeria want him

Iroegbunam was born in Birmingham to Nigerian parents. He played for England at youth level and helped the Under-19 side win the European Championship in 2022, but he has not played a competitive senior match for England. That keeps the door open for Nigeria.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has previously identified Iroegbunam as a midfield option. Reports in April said the player had become more open to discussing a switch to the Super Eagles, although Nigeria had not received formal confirmation from his representatives at that stage.

His profile also fits an obvious need. Wilfred Ndidi has been one of Nigeria’s key midfielders for years. Iroegbunam offers a younger alternative in the defensive midfield role, with strength, energy, tackling ability and Premier League experience.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic described those qualities before the transfer was completed.

“He has a great size, he is very dynamic, powerful, has pace and is strong in challenges and duels,” Jakirovic said.

What happens before AFCON 2027?

The next step should be regular Premier League football. Iroegbunam needs to establish himself at Hull, stay fit and turn his physical qualities into consistent performances. He made only one league appearance for Everton at the start of the 2026-27 season before the transfer, making regular football an important part of his next phase.

If that happens, Chelle has a clear route to bring him into the Super Eagles setup before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria do not need to rush him into a starting role. A first senior call-up, training with the squad and appearances in qualifiers or friendlies could allow him to learn the system while Ndidi and other senior midfielders provide experience.

Iroegbunam’s Hull move has therefore created two opportunities at once, a fresh Premier League chapter and a realistic path toward becoming Nigeria’s long-term midfield option.
