Super Eagles: Two key reasons Ugochukwu fits Chelle’s midfield plans

The Super Eagles could receive a major midfield boost ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers following a positive update on Lesley Ugochukwu’s international future, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who was born in France is the nephew of former Super Eagles defender Onyekachi Apam and is also eligible to play for Nigeria.

Although Ugochukwu has represented France at various youth levels and also featured for the French Olympic team, he is yet to play a competitive senior international for Les Bleus.

For some time now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been working to convince the Burnley midfielder, who is expected to spend next season at Galatasaray, to switch his international allegiance.

According to reports, Ugochukwu has now begun the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport. Once that process is completed, he will officially become eligible for a Super Eagles call-up, provided his nationality switch is also approved.

The timing could not be better for Eric Chelle, who is still building his squad and remains open to giving opportunities to new players ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming competitions.

Since Ugochukwu has not represented France at senior level in an official competitive match, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria. After completing the necessary nationality switch, he could become one of the latest dual-nationality players to join the Super Eagles.

Earlier this year, Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo completed his own switch from England to Nigeria, and Ugochukwu could now follow the same path.

One of the biggest reasons Ugochukwu would be a valuable addition is his ability to eventually succeed Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi.

Ndidi has been a key figure for Nigeria since making his debut in 2015. Now 29, the Besiktas midfielder is entering the latter stages of his career, while uncertainty also surrounds his club future.

Reports have linked him with a possible move to Saudi Arabia this summer. If that happens, concerns over his long-term role with the national team could increase. Bringing in Ugochukwu would give Nigeria a ready-made option for the future instead of forcing the team into a last-minute search for a replacement.

At just 22, he has many years ahead of him and could become a key figure in Nigeria’s midfield for the foreseeable future.

Another reason Ugochukwu fits Chelle’s plans is Nigeria’s need for more quality and depth in midfield.

Over the years, the Super Eagles have consistently produced top attackers and dependable defenders, but the midfield has often lacked the energy and balance needed to compete against stronger opponents.

That weakness has been exposed in several important matches and tournaments, where Nigeria struggled to control games through the middle and Ugochukwu could help solve that problem.

Although he is naturally a defensive midfielder, he is also comfortable playing as a box-to-box midfielder. His ability to cover ground, win duels, carry the ball forward and contribute defensively would give Chelle more tactical flexibility and strengthen the team’s options in midfield.

Convincing him to commit to Nigeria would be a major boost. Recent developments could also work in the Super Eagles’ favour, with Ugochukwu expected to join Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray.
