Shots fired! Bafana legend Khumalo will bet ‘all his money’ that Super Eagles will fall

Doctor Khumalo, a Bafana Bafana legend, holds the belief that South Africa have the potential to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico ahead of Nigeria.

The Hugo Broos-led team suffered a defeat to the Super Eagles in the semi-finals of the just-concluded 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024), falling short in a penalty shootout.

Despite the setback, Bafana Bafana exceeded expectations by clinching third place in the tournament held in Ivory Coast. This achievement marks their first medal since 2000, showcasing significant progress.

Additionally, their performance has led to advancements in both the CAF and FIFA rankings.

Due to an intriguing twist of fate, South Africa will have the chance to seek redemption for their defeat at the hands of their West African rivals.

This opportunity will arise when the two nations face off in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier scheduled for June 3, 2024, with Bafana Bafana serving as guests of the Super Eagles.

Placed in Group C alongside Nigeria, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Benin, the Super Eagles emerge as the strongest contenders to thwart Bafana Bafana's World Cup qualification bid potentially.

After playing two matches, Rwanda currently top the standings with four points, followed by South Africa in second place with three points, and Nigeria trailing in third with two points.

Khumalo fires warning shot to Super Eagles

Reflecting on the upcoming challenges in the World Cup qualifiers, Khumalo shared his optimistic outlook for South Africa's chances.

“I would like to believe that Nigeria is in our group, but from what I have seen in Ivory Coast, I can bet all my money that SA can overcome that obstacle,” he confidently stated.

Bafana Bafana last secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup in 2002, held in Japan and South Korea. However, they participated in the 2010 edition as the host nation.

Despite this lengthy gap in qualifying through the traditional route, their recent third-place finish in the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast has instilled confidence in Bafana legend Khumalo, who believes they have what it takes to qualify for the upcoming global event.
