‘No kid gloves’ – Super Falcons coach Madugu lays out objectives for Cameroon friendlies

Published on by

As the Super Falcons gear up for Saturday’s friendly clash with the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, head coach Justin Madugu is calling for total commitment from his players, stressing the need for a strong performance to boost morale ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The two-legged showdown begins this weekend at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, with the return leg scheduled for Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

“Yes, these are friendly matches but we must approach things with the right mentality, with the attitude that we want to win, and with the mindset that we are already at the championship,” Madugu said.

“It will not be right for us to treat the games with kid’s gloves and earn results that will have an untoward psychological effect on the team going to Morocco.”

Nigeria, the most successful team in WAFCON history with nine titles, are eyeing a record-extending 10th crown when the tournament kicks off in July in Morocco.

Madugu: Cameroon friendlies crucial to Super Falcons success in Morocco

For Madugu, these friendlies go beyond just fine-tuning tactics; they're crucial to evaluating the team’s progress and preparing mentally for the challenges ahead.

“Our objectives for these two matches include improving our game philosophy and tactical approach.

“We want to observe and assess the players in line with our philosophy. We are determined to improve the team’s coordination, team spirit and mentality towards winning the Women’s AFCON.”

The Falcons are currently holding camp in Ikenne, with a blend of experienced names and returning faces.

“We must ensure a positive mentality and keep to the game plan. It is important for us to use the games to underscore our preparedness for the Women AFCON,” Madugu added.
