Super Falcons star Jennifer Echegini has ended the season with a bang after being named the best U-23 player in the Serie A.
The 23-year-old only joined Juventus Women in January after playing college football in the United States of America, but has made a huge impact in her short time in the Italian women’s top flight.
Echegini previously played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One League in America, where she was one of the division’s most consistent players. She spent three years at Mississippi State Bulldogs before joining Florida State Seminoles in 2022.
Having scored goals for fun in the NCAA Division One League, Echegini was snapped up by Juventus in January 2024, and played a key role as the Italian giants finished second in the just-concluded Serie A season.
Super Falcons' Echegini wins Serie A U-23 MVP
The Nigeria international, who switched nationality to represent the Super Falcons despite being born in the Netherlands, had an impressive debut campaign in the Italian top flight and was involved in 11 goals in 16 matches.
Echegini scored 10 goals and provided one assist, resulting in the 23-year-old being named the best young player in Italy. A statement from Juventus Women said the Nigerian will be rewarded with a commemorative plaque at the start of the 2024/25 season. The club also congratulated their midfielder for her excellent debut campaign.
“Jennifer Onyi Echegini had a decisive impact on Juventus Women. Having arrived in Turin last January directly from the United States, the midfielder born in 2001 took very little time to settle into the new reality, scoring 10 goals and one assist in 16 appearances,” Juventus wrote on their official website.
“Numbers that have earned her, in just a few months, the title of eBay MVP as the best Under 23 in the women's Serie A in the season just ended, evidenced by a dedicated commemorative plaque that will be delivered at the beginning of next season. Congratulations, Joe!”
Meanwhile, the highlights of Echegini’s season include helping Juventus Women to beat rivals Inter Milan home and away for the first time in their history, and also netting a sensational hat-trick against Fiorentina.
