Super Falcons to renew acquaintance with perennial bullies France

After their two-game winning series against Algeria, the Super Falcons will be back in action when they take on the French Women’s national side later this month.

The Falcons defeated Algeria 2-0 and 4-1 in Ikenne and Lagos, respectively, in the last window and will now face a sterner test when they meet the European powerhouse.

In the last set of friendlies, Super Falcons interim coach Justin Madugu used a largely home-based squad, sprinkled with some foreign-based regulars.

However, it is expected that the squad for the France friendly will see a recall of the usual suspects with the likes of Asisat Oshola and Toni Payne back in the squad.

The French Football Federation announced the fixture via their official X handle (formerly known as Twitter).

“The Blues will face Nigeria in a friendly on November 30 at the Raymond Kopa Stadium in Angers,” the statement read.

Will Super Falcons break the France jinx?

The last time the two teams met was in the group stage of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, where the French won 1-0.

Super Falcons' defender Ngozi Ebere was adjudged by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to have fouled French forward Viviane Asseyi, who went down in the box from contact by Ebere.

Chiamaka Nnadozie saved Wendie Renard’s spot kick, but she was adjudged to have stepped off her line, and a retake was ordered.

Renard scored on the second attempt.

Interestingly, the last time the two teams met in a friendly, Nigeria suffered an 8-0 annihilation at the hands of the French in 2018, one of the worst outings by the women’s senior side.

They now have a chance later this month to avenge those defeats.
