Super Falcons: The impact of Mission X on latest FIFA rankings

Published on by

The latest FIFA rankings, taking into account the Super Falcons’ historic win at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been released.

The prior update to the rankings, which came out in June, saw the Nigeria women’s side motionless in the standings despite their lack of activity in the February international window. Also, despite the likes of South Africa, Morocco and Zambia all playing – and winning – matches in the previous window, they still lagged behind Nigeria in the continental log.

The rankings for August 2025, released on Thursday, are the first following the Super Falcons’ successful #MissionX campaign in Morocco. At the tournament in July, they routed Zambia and edged South Africa, before coming back from two goals down to defeat the host nation in the final in Rabat.

What is the Super Falcons’ latest FIFA ranking?

In spite of their WAFCON heroics, however, FIFA has taken a dim view of Nigeria.

The Super Falcons are, once again, frozen in the rankings, retaining their 36th spot in the world. For context, this puts them behind the likes of Ukraine, Finland, Poland and Ukraine.

There is some consolation, however, in the fact that Nigeria remain Africa’s premier side in the rankings. Remarkably, despite reaching the WAFCON final, Morocco lost ground in the world rankings, dropping four spots, but remaining no.3 on the continent.

Below are the top five.

  • Nigeria [36]
  • South Africa [54]
  • Morocco [64]
  • Zambia [65]
  • Cameroon [66]

What is the Super Falcons highest-ever FIFA ranking?

The Super Falcons' highest-ever ranking is 23. This was achieved right at the inception of the women's FIFA rankings in July 2003.

Nigeria equalled this peak on two further occasions (in 2004 and 2005), but have never placed as highly after. Since being ranked 25th in 2008, their ranking has been on a decline, with the lowest ebb coming in August 2022 when, following a fourth-place finish at the WAFCON, they reached a nadir of 46.
