WAFCON 2025: Super Falcons roar back from the brink to complete ‘Mission X’

Nigeria's Super Falcons staged a comeback for the ages to beat Morocco and claim a tenth Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

After a poor first-half performance that saw the hosts go into the break with what seemed like a decisive advantage, Nigeria came roaring back, scoring thrice after the hour mark to win 3-2.

The result saw the Super Falcons maintain their unbeaten record in WAFCON finals, and cemented their status as the most prolific international tournament team in world football.

Slow start unable to deter Super Falcons

Nigeria coach Justin Madugu made one change from the team that defeated South Africa in the semi-final, with Deborah Abiodun coming in for Jennifer Echegini.

Morocco started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges. Their early momentum was rewarded when an error presented an opportunity to Ghizlane Chebbak, who made no mistake with a finish from the edge of the box.

The hosts doubled their advantage not long after, with Sanaa Mssoudy capitalising on another error to scoff a finish past Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The second half saw Madugu shuffle the pack, but it took a moment of good fortune to get the record African champions back into the match. For the second match running, a Folashade Ijamilusi cross struck a hand inside the box, and Esther Okoronkwo stepped up to pull one back from the penalty spot.

Soon after, it was 2-2, as Okoronkwo charged into the box following a flowing team move and squared for Ijamilusi to tap home.

With the game finely poised going into the final 10 minutes, it was Nigeria who held their nerve. An Okoronkwo free-kick was met by substitute Echegini, who side-footed home to silence the Olympic Stadium in Rabat and complete a historic comeback.
