Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has revealed that she faced harsh criticism after completing her move from Leicester City to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad last year.
Plumptre, who joined the Saudi Women’s League outfit in September 2023 following Nigeria’s exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup, said the reaction to her switch was far from positive, particularly from those who had supported her during her time in England.
“When I moved out here, the reaction was not good at all. That was difficult,” the 27-year-old said to BBC Sport. “There were people around Leicester – I remember some comments I received – it was like I was not the person they thought I was.

“I had deeply hurt them because they felt like I was representing something which makes them not feel valued, and I understand that. It does not mean I condone certain things, even if the move means I am associated with certain things.”

Before leaving Leicester, Plumptre was actively involved with the club’s LGBT supporters’ group, forging a bond with fans who admired her openness and advocacy. Her decision to continue her career in Saudi Arabia, a country where LGBT rights remain heavily restricted, drew criticism from some of those same circles.

Despite the controversy, the former England youth international has remained focused on her football, establishing herself as a key player for both club and country.
Since joining Al Ittihad, Plumptre has continued to impress, making 28 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists; exceptional figures for a left-back.
The Anglo-Nigerian also played a leading role in helping Nigeria qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games and reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after defeating Morocco, sealing a record tenth triumph for the Super Falcons.
