Super Falcons vs Japan Player Ratings: Echigini and Ucheibe prove their worth

Published on by

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been sent packing from the Paris 2024 Olympic Women's Football Tournament after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Japan in their final group game.

The encounter marked their third consecutive loss in Group C, but at least the Falcons scored their first goal in this year's event.

These are the individual ratings of Randy Waldrum's troops from the keenly contested Super Falcons vs Japan affair in Nantes on Wednesday evening.

Goalkeeper

Chiamaka Nnadozie (6.2/10)

The Paris FC shot-stopper had positioning lapses in the game, her worst in three matches. And with the defensive frailties the players showcased at the back, there was little she could do. Still, Nnadozie managed two saves.

Defenders

Chidinma Okeke (6.4/10)

Okeke's performance at the back was not as good as it was against Spain. She failed to close down Hamano for Japan's opening goal and was rightfully subbed off as the second half began.

Blessing Demehin (6.2/10)

Demehin did not showcase excellence in her duties as she has done for Nigeria in the past. She had poor positioning and marking which aided Japan's formidable attack to create havoc. The Stade de Reims player picked up a yellow card for her troubles.

Osinachi Ohale (6.3/10)

Ohale was dependable at the back despite the team's poor showing in general. The Pachuca defender made a good clearance in the first half, blocked a goal-bound shot, and was never dribbled past.

Michelle Alozie (6/10)

The American-born defender produced her worst performance for Nigeria in the tournament. She was easily dribbled and practically ineffective in the game.

Midfielders

Deborah Abiodun (6.5/10)

Deborah worked tirelessly in the middle of the pack for the Super Falcons, but the energetic midfield pairing of Hamano and Hayashi for Japan greatly reduced her effectiveness. She was stretchered off with 15 minutes left to play.

Christy Ucheibe (6.9/10)

Ucheibe showcased energy in the middle of the pack for Nigeria. Her relentless pressing and ability to create chances earned her an assist. The Benfica midfielder shone for Nigeria.

Toni Payne (6.5/10)

Payne's work rate in the game was commendable, as she delivered a key pass that wasn't well utilised. The constant marking by the Japanese meant that the 29-year-old lost the ball six times.

Forwards

Asisat Oshoala (7/10)

Oshoala capped off a disappointing outing in this year's Olympics without mustering a single shot on target. She was not sharp in the game and only registered 12 touches in the 60 minutes she was on the field.

Jennifer Echigini (7.6/10)

Echigini gave the team a glimmer of hope when her left-footed shot from outside the box found its way into the net in the 42nd minute. She bowed out of the tournament as Nigeria's sole goalscorer.

Rasheedat Ajibade (6.5/10)

Captain Ajibade struggled in the game as the midfield failed to really create clear-cut opportunities. However, she delivered a key pass and had one effort off target.

Super Falcons vs Japan: Substitutes

Nicole Payne (6.6/10)

Nicole Payne was brought on to replace Okeke and add defensive solidity which was lacking in the first half. She held her defensive responsibilities well.

Chinwendu Ihezuo (5/10)

Ihezuo replaced the ineffective Oshoala in the 60th minute of play. She was able to deliver a key pass into the box which resulted in nothing.

Esther Okoronkwo (5/10)

Okoronkwo came on for the injured Deborah Abiodun in the 75th minute. She, too, didn't make any impact.

Uchenna Kanu
