Super Falcons announce readiness for WAFCON Mission X with Jollof Derby humbling of Ghana

The Super Falcons overwhelmed Ghana to round up their preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The nine-time African champions, who came into Sunday’s encounter off the back of a goalless draw with Portugal, were in need of a pick-me-up ahead of their WAFCON opener against Tunisia on July 6.

They found that with a commanding display against their long-time rivals, taking the lead in the first half and never relinquishing it en route to a 3-1 victory.

Nigeria took the lead in the 34th minute through forward Chinwendu Ihezuo, before the returning Asisat Oshoala made it 2-0 from the spot on the stroke of half-time.

Sporting eight changes from the team that drew with Portugal, the Super Falcons nevertheless were dominant, and extended their lead five minutes after the restart through captain Rasheedat Ajibade. 

A raft of substitutions followed, and Ghana pulled one back two minutes from time, but to no real effect on the scoreline.
