Terem Moffi transfer battle: Why Hamburger could beat Beşiktaş to Super Eagles star

Turkish giants Beşiktaş have joined Hamburger SV in the race for the Super Eagles and OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nice have made it clear that they want to sell the 27-year-old, while his contract runs until June 2027 and his current market value is around €8 million.

Hamburger have already been linked with a move for Moffi, while reports say Beşiktaş added the Nigerian to their striker shortlist as they looked at options including Dusan Vlahovic, Wahi and Vangelis Pavlidis.

The question now is not only which club can complete the deal, but which destination gives Moffi the best chance to rebuild his career after a difficult period.

OGC Nice push Moffi towards the exit

Moffi’s situation at Nice has changed sharply since he joined the club from Lorient in January 2023. The Nigerian moved to the French club after an impressive spell at Lorient and initially looked like an important part of Nice’s attack. His record in Ligue 1 still shows why clubs across Europe are interested as he has scored 54 goals in 148 league appearances for Lorient and Nice.

His recent years, however, have been much harder. A serious ACL injury disrupted his progress during the 2024-25 campaign. His recovery affected his playing time and made it difficult for him to regain his earlier rhythm. During the first half of the 2025-26 season, he managed only two Ligue 1 goals in 10 appearances before moving to FC Porto on loan.

Porto won the Portuguese league during Moffi’s loan spell, but the striker did not produce enough goals to convince the club to use its €8 million purchase option. He therefore returned to Nice in July.

Nice president Maurice Cohen thereafter made the club’s position clear. Moffi was put on the list of players the club wanted to sell. Cohen said Nice would do everything possible to transfer him, while sporting director Roger Ricort also suggested that the Nigerian was unlikely to play for the club again.

Moffi has not officially been thrown out of the squad. When he returned from Porto, Nice allowed him to train normally while waiting for a transfer. His contract expires in June 2027, giving the French club a strong reason to find a buyer this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

Beşiktaş vs Hamburger: Two very different opportunities

Beşiktaş offer Moffi the chance to go to Turkey, where he would join one of the country’s most famous clubs and compete in a league that he already accomodates many of his Nigerian teammates.

There is also a Nigerian connection at Beşiktaş. Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi plays for the Turkish club. Ndidi was part of Nigeria’s squad for June friendlies against Poland and Portugal alongside Moffi. That could make Moffi’s adjustment easier if Beşiktaş complete the move.

Hamburger SV offer a different challenge. The German club returned to the Bundesliga after winning promotion and are looking for more attacking power as they prepare for their second season back in Germany’s top division. Hamburger had Nigerian forward Philip Otele during the second half last campaign but decided against making his loan spell permanent.

Overall, Beşiktaş can offer the former Lorient star the pressure and expectation of a club fighting for trophies in Turkey. Hamburg can offer the Super Eagles striker the chance to establish himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues while playing a central role.

Which club gives Moffi the better career path?

Hamburger looks like the better choice if Moffi’s main target is to rebuild his career and return to his best level.

The first reason is playing time. Moffi needs regular competitive football after his ACL injury and an inconsistent season at Porto. Sitting on the bench at another club would do little to restore his confidence. Hamburg’s need for a reliable centre-forward could give him a clearer route to regular Bundesliga starts.

The second reason is tactical fit. Moffi’s game is built around strength, speed and movement behind defenders. At his best, he can hold off defenders, attack crosses and then use his pace when space opens up. Those qualities can be useful for a Bundesliga team that wants to move quickly from defence into attack.

Beşiktaş would bring greater pressure. The Istanbul club expects to challenge near the top of the Turkish Süper Lig, and a striker arriving for a transfer fee would be expected to score quickly. Moffi could find himself competing with other attacking players for starts while also dealing with the demands of a club where every poor result receives heavy attention.

Hamburg offers a different kind of pressure. The club’s target to again avoid relegation means every Bundesliga point will matter, but Moffi could have a clear role in helping the team stay in the division. Playing regularly against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and other top German teams would also give him a strong platform to rebuild his reputation.

His Super Eagles career makes that even more important. Moffi was still selected by Eric Chelle for Nigeria’s 2026 Unity Cup squad and the subsequent friendlies in Europe. Nigeria’s attack is already crowded with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, Akor Adams, Paul Onuachu and other options. Moffi therefore needs more than a big club name. He needs goals, starts and a consistent run of matches.

That is where Hamburg could give him the edge. A successful Bundesliga season would put Moffi back in the conversation every week. Scoring against top German opposition would also give him a strong platform ahead of Nigeria’s next major international targets. Beşiktaş may offer the bigger immediate pressure and a stronger chance of competing for trophies, but Hamburg appears to offer the cleaner route for Moffi’s career recovery.

At 27, Moffi does not need another season spent waiting for his chance. He needs to play, score and rebuild the form that once made him one of Ligue 1’s most dangerous forwards. If Hamburger can give him that role, Germany could be the better destination for the Super Eagles striker.
