Terem Moffi gains advantage at Porto after striker who snubbed Nigeria for Spain tears ACL

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi is set to get a boost in playing time at Porto, as first-choice striker Samu Omorodion Aghehowa has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, Afrik-Foot reports.

Samu has been Porto’s leading man since last season and has consistently delivered for the club. This season, he has already contributed 13 goals in 20 league appearances for the Dragons.

Consequently, it was expected that when Super Eagles striker Moffi joined in January, he would play second fiddle to the Spanish point man.

However, Moffi is now set for a major increase in minutes as unexpected misfortune hit Samu on Monday night.

The 21-year-old striker was seen writhing in pain just before the break in Porto’s 1-1 draw against rivals Sporting CP. He was unable to continue and had to be subbed off at halftime.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Samu had torn his ACL, an injury that will invariably rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

How Terem Moffi Will Profit From Samu Aghehowa’s Injury

Although Samu Aghehowa’s injury is a sad blow for the team, Terem Moffi will be one of the biggest beneficiaries, as he is now positioned for significantly more game time.

Right now, his only competition at center-forward is unproven 21-year-old Turkish striker Deniz Gul. If Moffi impresses coach Francesco Farioli in training, he will likely become the club’s first-choice option.

Meanwhile, Moffi is expected to take up a big brother role for Samu during this difficult period. Having recently recovered from an ACL injury himself, he understands exactly what the young Spaniard is going through.

While Samu has Nigerian parents, he snubbed the Super Eagles to represent Spain. However, that shared heritage suggests he and Moffi should get along well.

As he helps Samu through his recovery, Moffi must grab this chance at regular football with both hands and aim to become the talisman for Porto. He could be the man to lead the club to silverware by the end of the season.
