Terem Moffi scores 50th Ligue 1 goal but Nice suffer defeat

Published on by

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi was on target for Nice on Sunday afternoon. However, his goal was not enough to salvage his club from defeat at the hands of Nantes.

Nice hosted Nantes at the Allianz Riviera on Sunday, and the visitors took the lead through Matthis Abline in the 19th minute, which remained the score until the end of the first half.

A spirited second-half performance by the home side ensured they were awarded a penalty, which was expertly converted by Moffi, the Nigeria international, to draw his club level in the 72nd minute.

Nantes restored their lead five minutes later with Mostafa Mohammed scoring from a penalty kick, securing the away side's crucial goal and maximum points.

Nice are still placed fifth on the league table with 43 points after 27 games and are in the hunt for a European qualification slot.

They are trailing league leaders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by 13 points and second-placed team Brest by seven points.

Terem Moffi scores 50 Ligue 1 career goals

Moffi's goal against Nantes was his 50th in the French elite league. Between 2020 and 2023, he featured for Lorient, where he had joined from Belgium's Kortrijk.

With Lorient, he scored 34 goals in 87 games. Last season while on loan at Nice, he scored six goals in 16 games and in the current campaign, he has scored 10 goals to hit a half century of goals in the French top-flight.

How has Moffi fared in the 2023/24 season?

In the ongoing 2023/24 season, the 28-year-old has demonstrated strong performances in Ligue 1, being directly involved in 12 goals across 24 games, scoring 10 times whilst providing two assists.

However, in the French Cup, he played two games without finding the back of the net. Often being the focal point of his team's attacking efforts.

His ability to find the net has not only bolstered his team's performance but has also earned him recognition as one of the standout performers in the league.

Looking ahead, Moffi's form and consistency will continue to be crucial for his team's success as they strive for a place in European competitions.

With his ability to both score and create goals, Moffi remains a key figure in the club's quest for success.

Does Terem Moffi deserve a chance with the Super Eagles?

The Nice forward has often been overlooked by the coaches of the Super Eagles, despite his form compared to the players selected ahead of him.

Moffi was initially left out of Jose Peseiro's final AFCON squad but by a quirk of fate made an AFCON appearance as a replacement of Victor Boniface who pulled out due to an injury.

He made a cameo appearance for the Super Eagles against South Africa in the semi-final match.

In the recent friendlies played by the Super Eagles against Ghana and Mali, Moffi was once again overlooked by interim Super Eagles manager Finidi George, sparking a lot of discussion among Nigerian football fans.

Admittedly, the Super Eagles are blessed with an avalanche of attacking talents but Moffi surely deserves a chance to prove his mettle.

Since making his Super Eagles debut in 2021, Moffi has made 16 appearances, registering four goals.
