Terem Moffi nets 11th Ligue 1 goal of the season as Nice hold Marseille

Super Eagles and OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi was on the score sheet as his club came from behind to hold Olympique Marseille to a 2-2 draw in Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old has been in prolific form for the French side as they aim to secure a European spot. Having failed to score in his last two matches, Moffi was back among the goals as Nice shared the spoils with Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles forward opened the scoring after just 13 minutes when he steered Jeremie Boga’s pass into the back of the net. While his goal gave Nice a dream start, the Eaglets couldn’t build on it, with Marseille scoring on either side of the half-time break to turn the game around.

First, Jonathan Clauss equalised on the half-hour mark with a brilliant finish before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Marseille in front for the first time in the game after successfully converting a penalty in the 56th minute. Nice would, however, rally to snatch a draw following Melvin Bard’s late equaliser.

Neither side could find the winner in the final 18 minutes, although Nice would feel the most disappointed after failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage, as Marseille played the entirety of the second half with 10 men following Faris Moumbagna’s sending off.

For Moffi, Wednesday's goal marked his 11th of the season in Ligue 1. He is also now four goals short of matching his best tally of 14 in a season, which he recorded in the 2020/21 campaign.

The former Lorient forward remains one of Nigeria’s best players in the French top-flight, and is currently third on the country’s list of highest scorers to ever play in Ligue 1 – only John Utaka and Victor Ikpeba have scored more goals than Moffi.

Meanwhile, Moffi could be playing in the UEFA Champions League next season, with Nice currently four points behind fourth-placed Lille with four matches left to play.
