Terem Moffi to Hamburger SV – Full list of Nigerians to have played for Der Dino

Terem Moffi has become the latest Nigerian to join Hamburger SV, with the Super Eagles striker following in the footsteps of three compatriots who have previously represented the historic German club, Afrik-Foot reports.

Hamburger SV confirmed the signing of the 27-year-old from OGC Nice earlier today, with Moffi completing his medical before signing his contract and taking the number nine shirt.

The move gives Moffi a chance to revive his career in Germany after a difficult period at Nice and a loan spell at Porto.

It also adds another Nigerian name to the history of one of Germany’s most recognisable clubs.

Nigerians to have played for Hamburger SV

1. Macauley Chrisantus

Chrisantus was the first Nigerian on this list to make a real impact within the HSV system.

Born in Abuja, the former Golden Eaglets striker joined Hamburg in 2007 after starring for Nigeria at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer, and the Silver Ball, with Toni Kroos taking home the Golden Boy award.

He subsequently progressed into Hamburg’s senior setup, making appearances for HSV II and registering four goals in 12 appearances for the reserve side.

Chrisantus was also part of the first-team squad between 2008 and 2012, although he never made a Bundesliga appearance for the senior team.

His development continued through loan spells at Karlsruher SC and FSV Frankfurt before he eventually left Germany for Spain.

2. Jordan Torunarigha

Torunarigha’s connection to Nigeria is different from Chrisantus’. Born in Chemnitz, Germany, to Nigerian parents, the centre-back came through the youth system at Hertha Berlin and represented Germany at several youth levels before eventually switching allegiance to Nigeria.

He joined Hamburger SV in 2025 after leaving Belgian club Gent on a free transfer.

The move made him the second Nigerian international to represent the club, and he has since become an established member of the HSV squad.

Torunarigha played 24 Bundesliga matches for Hamburg in the 2025/26 season, underlining his importance to the club’s return to Germany’s top flight.

He also remains a member of the Super Eagles squad, although his international career has so far been limited to one senior appearance for Nigeria.

3. Philip Otele

Otele arrived at Hamburg in January 2026 on loan from Swiss champions FC Basel.

Unlike Chrisantus, who came through Hamburg’s youth system, Otele arrived as an established attacking player following productive spells in Lithuania, Romania, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland.

The winger had impressed for Basel before Hamburg secured his services, having scored five goals and provided four assists in 20 Swiss Super League appearances before the move. He had also scored twice in the Europa League.

Hamburg’s sporting director Claus Costa described Otele as a winger who brings “Spielwitz und Torgefahr” — creativity and a threat in front of goal- when the loan was announced.

Otele became the first-ever Nigerian to find the back of the net for Hamburg. The goal came when Hamburg lost to Dortmund last season at the Signal Iduna Park.

4. Terem Moffi

Moffi is now the latest Nigerian to wear the famous HSV shirt. The Super Eagles striker arrives from Nice on a permanent transfer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Porto.

His career has taken him through several countries, including England, Lithuania, Belgium, France and Portugal, before Germany became his latest destination.

Hamburg have reportedly secured the striker for €2m modest fee after Nice paid more than € 22.5m for him three years ago.

For Moffi, the move represents more than another chapter in his nomadic career.

Hamburg needs a reliable goalscorer, while the Nigerian needs regular football and a platform to rediscover the form that once made him one of Ligue 1’s most dangerous strikers.
