Tinubu pays Super Falcons WAFCON reward: Breakdown of players’ and officials’ payouts

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have received the $100,000 in rewards and bonuses owed to them by the Federal Government.

The team earned the reward after winning a tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title at the 2024 edition (played in 2025) of the competition. They defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in remarkable fashion to claim the title.

President Tinubu announced the reward for the team and coaching staff at a banquet upon their return to the country.

However, that was in July, and since then, there has been much discussion regarding when the players would actually receive the money. The Nigeria Football Federation and the Federal Government have a reputation for failing to fulfill their promises.

On Tuesday, the National Sports Commission revealed that the team has finally received the funds. The statement on their page read, “The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), has fulfilled President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s reward pledge to the Super Falcons.

“The Super Falcons with players, coaches and officials receiving their cash awards of Naira Equivalent of $100,000 USD to players and $50,000 USD to officials following Nigeria’s historic 10th WAFCON title win.

“This is in addition to the 3 Bedroom Flats in Abuja and the National Honours of OON already given to each of the players and officials as part of the Presidential Rewards.

“The Commission celebrates this landmark achievement and the unprecedented timely fulfilment of the presidential reward package, recognising the team’s outstanding contribution to Nigerian sports.”

What Caused The Delay?

President Tinubu promised the Super Falcons this reward in July 2025, but it has taken until now for the government to fulfill its promise. This delay occurred because the reward was not included in last year’s national budget.

Although the funds were added to this year’s budget, federal government processes are typically very slow; hence, it has taken until now for them to receive the money.

How Much Will Super Falcons Players And Staff Get?

The Super Falcons players will receive $100,000 (₦140 million) each, while the backroom staff will receive $50,000 (₦70 million).

Only the players who were in the squad for that specific tournament are eligible for the payout. Those who featured in previous tournaments but missed the 2025 edition will not receive anything. It is also only the staff from that tournament that will get the $50,000 reward. And these include the coach, assistants, medical staff, and media officer.

This will serve as a major boost for the Super Falcons players after their disappointing outing at the recent WAFCON, putting some fire in their bellies as they push for qualification for the next tournament.

There is currently an open international window for the Super Falcons to play a friendly match, but the NFF has not scheduled one yet. Their next competitive fixture is an Olympic qualifying match against Morocco, where they will be looking to defeat their opponents and advance to the penultimate round.
