‘I’d be in hospital!’ – Victor Boniface takes aim at media over failed medical narrative

Victor Boniface has played down speculation about his fitness after completing a season-long loan switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Werder Bremen

The Super Eagles striker faced questions on Wednesday during his unveiling at the Weserstadion but responded defiantly. During the summer transfer window, AC Milan had invited Boniface for medicals ahead of a proposed loan move, but the deal collapsed after scans raised concerns. The Italians eventually turned their focus to Christopher Nkunku, leaving the striker’s future in limbo.

When asked directly about his health, Boniface made his stance clear. “Whatever you want to believe in the media, you can believe them, that’s not on me… I don’t care. If my body is not 100%, I will be in the hospital. I will not be here talking to you,” he told reporters.

Boniface determined to silence doubts with Bremen loan

Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise with all the hallmarks of a Bundesliga star in the making. His debut campaign lived up to the billing: goals, assists, and relentless pressing that powered Xabi Alonso’s side to an unbeaten league season and a historic domestic double in 2024.

Yet injuries continued to interrupt his momentum. During the invincible run in January 2024 (2023/24 season), he was sidelined by a muscle injury. Later, in November of the 2024/25 campaign, a thigh problem kept him out again, pushing him further down the pecking order just as competition for attacking places intensified.

Now fully fit for the 2025/26 season, Boniface was overlooked for competitive action at Leverkusen before sealing his loan move.

The Weserstadion may be a more modest stage, but it offers him the platform to reset, quiet the speculation, and prove that the “fragile giant” still has bite.
