Victor Boniface injury: Terem Moffi’s Super Eagles call excites, but Peseiro ‘doesn’t know his onions’

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface will not participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) due to a groin injury he picked up in training. With that in mind, José Peseiro has made the decision to call up Nice's Terem Moffi to replace the Bayer Leverkusen player.

Given that the Super Eagles coach already submitted his final 23-man squad, any changes will have to be approved by African football's governing body, CAF.

Nigeria will begin their AFCON 2023 campaign this weekend, when they take on Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

The absence of key players like Boniface, Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho will likely hurt their quest for a continental title.

Super Eagles fans react to Victor Boniface injury

On that note, fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their opinion on Boniface's injury, as well as his replacement.

X user @Don17488409 was happy for Moffi. He believes he deserved a place in the 25-man squad, after starting and scoring in the qualifying rounds of AFCON 2023.

Another user @Damiadenuga was concerned about Moffi's ability to partner with Napoli's Victor Osimhen.

It's important to note that all outfield players on the Super Eagles' AFCON 2023 squad currently play in Europe. The only NPFL player who made the cut is Enyimba's shot-stopper Leke Ojo.

With that in mind, user @Itstosintaylor felt that Peseiro should've replaced Boniface with a home-based striker.

In spite of the team's recent injury concerns, user @KatorTarkaa still has faith that the Super Eagles will hoist their fourth AFCON title next month.

Of course, there are fans who don't believe that Peseiro is the right man to lead Nigeria to glory. User @GodwinEvoh called for the Portuguese coach to be sacked.

These are other tweets from X users:

Boniface is reportedly sidelined for six weeks.
