Boniface: Leverkusen fed up, willing to deal as out-of-favour striker turns toxic

Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly prepared to offload Victor Boniface this summer, even at a reduced price, as concerns grow over his attitude and impact on the squad.

The Nigeria forward has become frustrated with his diminished role under Xabi Alonso, and reports suggest his discontent is creating tension within the dressing room.

Boniface was close to leaving in January, with Al Nassr agreeing to a €70 million deal, including a lucrative salary package. However, the Saudi club ultimately shifted their focus to Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, forcing Boniface to stay put.

Since then, his role has been largely limited to substitute appearances, with Patrik Schick preferred in attack or Alonso opting for a system without a traditional No. 9.

Why are Leverkusen putting Victor Boniface up for sale?

Having lost his starting spot, Boniface's frustration has reportedly led to clashes with teammates, including an on-field dispute with Emiliano Buendía.

Leverkusen, who initially valued him at around €70 million, are now believed to be open to offers closer to €50 million plus bonuses.

CEO Fernando Carro had previously acknowledged the club’s need for a major sale each summer to fund reinforcements. While no such deal materialized last year, offloading Boniface could provide a significant boost to their transfer budget.

Injuries have also been a recurring issue for the 24-year-old. He has already missed 35 games since joining Leverkusen, including a lengthy spell on the sidelines earlier this year with an adductor injury.

His history of setbacks, including a cruciate ligament tear at FK Bodø/Glimt, has raised doubts about his long-term reliability.

With Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, reportedly monitoring his situation, Boniface may yet find an exit route from Leverkusen before the start of next season.
