Victor Osimhen produced another European masterclass, firing a brilliant hat-trick to lead Galatasaray to a 3-0 victory over Ajax in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Super Eagles striker, who missed the Turkish champions’ opening group match against Eintracht Frankfurt, has now scored in all three of his Champions League outings this season. His performance in Amsterdam not only powered Galatasaray to their best-ever start in the competition but also etched his name deeper into both club and Nigerian football history.
Osimhen opened the scoring just before the hour mark, meeting Leroy Sané’s inviting cross with a precise header. Minutes later, he doubled the advantage from the spot after a VAR review spotted a handball in the Ajax box. The Nigerian completed his treble with another calm penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to seal a commanding away win.

Osimhen smashes records with historic treble
The hat-trick takes Osimhen’s tally to six goals in this season’s Champions League, more than any other player so far, including the likes of Erling Haaaland and Kylian Mbappe. It also made him the first Galatasaray player to net a Champions League hat-trick since Burak Yılmaz in 2012, and the first to score in three consecutive matches in the tournament for the club.

His exploits in Amsterdam carried further significance. The 25-year-old’s total in UEFA competitions now stands at 25, surpassing Obafemi Martins (23) to become Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer in European football. He also extended his run of scoring in European matches for Galatasaray to eight consecutive games, a club record.
Since swapping Napoli for Istanbul, Osimhen has scored 46 times in 50 appearances for Galatasaray, including 12 in European competitions. That haul moves him level with Milan Baroš and Shabani Nonda as the joint-highest scorers for the club in Europe, a record he could soon hold alone.
