Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyökeres: Who should Atlético Madrid sign for Lookman?

Atlético Madrid are preparing for a major rebuild in attack as uncertainty continues to surround Julián Álvarez’s future, Afrik-Foot reports.

Diego Simeone wants to keep his side among Europe’s elite, and two strikers have emerged as the club’s leading targets: Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Sweden’s Viktor Gyökeres.

Although reports from Spain claimed Atlético and Arsenal had agreed on a sensational swap deal involving Gyökeres and Álvarez, reliable transfer insiders have insisted that no final agreement has been reached. Talks remain exploratory, and several obstacles still stand in the way.

At the same time, Atlético are also working on a move for Osimhen, who is also on the watch-list of Barcelona and Manchester United, after another outstanding season with Galatasaray.

Atlético weighing Osimhen and Gyökeres as Álvarez exit looms

Gyökeres has long been admired by Simeone because of his physical style, relentless pressing and ability to lead the line. Spanish reports claimed Atlético were willing to value a possible deal at around €150 million, with Álvarez moving to Arsenal while Gyökeres would head to Madrid alongside a cash payment worth between €50 million and €60 million.

However, the proposed transfer has hit several problems. Álvarez reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona rather than Arsenal, while Mikel Arteta considers Gyökeres a key part of his squad after the Swedish striker scored 21 Premier League goals during his debut campaign to help Arsenal win the league title. Atlético also remain determined to receive around €150 million for Álvarez rather than accept player exchanges.

While that situation remains uncertain, Atlético have not forsaken their pursuit of Osimhen. The Nigerian striker’s representative, George Gardi, travelled to Madrid in July 2026 for face-to-face discussions with Atlético officials over a possible transfer. Reports also claim the Spanish club submitted a verbal offer worth around €120 million.

Galatasaray immediately rejected the proposal. Having completed Osimhen’s permanent signing from Napoli, the Turkish champions have no intention of selling cheaply and are believed to value him closer to €150 million.

Simeone reportedly believes Osimhen’s pace, pressing, strength and finishing make him a perfect fit for Atlético’s aggressive playing style. The presence of fellow Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman, who joined Atlético during the winter transfer window, could also help convince Osimhen to make the move to Spain.

Still, Atlético face serious competition. Manchester United remain interested, while a Saudi Pro League club has reportedly matched Atlético’s €120 million valuation with an attractive financial package. Meanwhile, Galatasaray are trying to keep their star striker by offering him the captain’s armband and the famous No. 9 shirt.

Breaking down the strengths of Osimhen and Gyökeres

Both forwards have proven themselves among Europe’s best, but they offer different qualities.

Osimhen is one of football’s most explosive strikers. His blistering pace allows him to attack space behind defenders, while his movement inside the penalty area makes him a constant goal threat. He is excellent in the air, presses defenders relentlessly and thrives during quick counter-attacks. His ability to score from crosses, through balls and set pieces makes him dangerous in almost every situation.

Gyökeres brings a different type of threat. The Swedish international is physically dominant and excels with his back to goal. He shields the ball well, links play with teammates and constantly occupies central defenders. His powerful running through the channels creates space for others, while his strength allows him to win battles against even the toughest defenders.

Both players also work hard without the ball, something Simeone values highly, but their roles within a front two would be very different.

Atlético: Who is the better partner for Lookman?

If Atlético’s priority is finding the best strike partner for Ademola Lookman, Gyökeres appears to have the slight tactical advantage.

Lookman is at his best when he can drift into open spaces, attack defenders one-on-one and arrive late inside the penalty area. He is not a traditional target man. Instead, he prefers freedom to move across the frontline and exploit gaps.

Gyökeres naturally creates those gaps. His physical presence forces centre-backs to stay close to him, opening spaces for Lookman to receive the ball in dangerous areas. When Gyökeres pulls wide or holds up possession, Lookman can make diagonal runs into the box, where he is often most effective.

This partnership closely resembles Simeone’s most successful attacking combinations at Atlético. Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann, followed by Luis Suárez and Griezmann, succeeded because one striker provided power while the other offered movement and creativity.

Osimhen would also form an exciting partnership with Lookman, especially because of their understanding from the Nigerian national team. Their pace, pressing and direct running could overwhelm many defences.

However, there is a risk that both players would often attack similar spaces behind defenders, reducing the tactical balance of the attack. Against teams defending deep, Atlético might also miss the hold-up play and physical reference point that Gyökeres naturally provides.

Gyökeres narrowly edges the debate for that reason. His strength, link-up play and ability to create space make him the ideal tactical partner for Lookman, while also fitting the type of centre-forward Simeone has traditionally relied upon throughout his most successful years at Atlético Madrid.
