Victor Osimhen: Lille coach cites 2 threats posed by striker’s homecoming

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been labelled as a threat that’ll be difficult to contain by Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti.

The Nigerian forward returns to the familiar surroundings of Stade Pierre-Mauroy this evening as Galatasaray visit Lille in the UEFA Champions League Group phase.

Osimhen enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 campaign with the French club, scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances before making a move to Napoli.

However, his return comes at a difficult time for Lille. Ancelotti’s men have lost their opening two Champions League matches, 3-2 to Real Betis and 3-0 to Arsenal. Les Dogues need a positive result to revive their hopes of making it to the knockout stages of the competition.

Galatasaray also arrive without a point in the league phase, having suffered defeats to Sporting CP and Barcelona. With both sides under pressure, Osimhen’s presence adds another layer of difficulty for the hosts.

Victor Osimhen: Lille coach identifies 2 threats

1. Osimhen’s match-winning quality

Ancelotti made it clear that Lille cannot rely on one defender to neutralise Osimhen, recalling the striker’s extraordinary influence during his time in Italy.

“We stop him with a collective effort. It does not depend on one player; it always depends on the team,” the Lille coach said in quotes revealed by French outlet Le Petit Lillois.

The Italian added that Osimhen was a player who almost won the Scudetto on his own at Napoli, highlighting the Nigerian’s ability to change the outcome of a match through his individual quality.

Osimhen played a central role in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign in 2022/23, scoring 26 league goals to finish as the division’s leading scorer. His combination of physical strength, movement and finishing makes him a difficult opponent to manage when he receives service in the final third.

The challenge for Lille will be to prevent the 27-year-old from finding space in and around the penalty area while ensuring he does not isolate individual defenders.

The striker’s familiarity with Lille could also make the occasion an emotional one, although his motivation for the reunion should not be assumed.

2. Galatasaray’s dangerous counter-attacks

Ancelotti’s warning extended beyond the 2023 CAF Player of the Year. The 37-year-old also highlighted Galatasaray’s ability to exploit transitions, a threat that could punish his team if it commits too many players forward.

“We must always be attentive, especially with our preventive marking. In our attacking play, we have to be well balanced because they have players who play vertically and are dangerous in transitions,” he explained.

The warning is relevant, given Lille’s need to chase points after their losses in the UCL this season. Ancelotti wants his side to compete on the front foot, but an aggressive approach could leave spaces for Galatasaray to exploit when possession changes hands.

Osimhen is well suited to that type of football, meaning the French side must strike a balance between playing free-flowing football and retaining enough defensive cover to deal with Galatasaray’s forward runs. If their midfield and defence become disconnected, they will be punished by the Super Eagles striker.

Lille face a crucial Champions League test

Ancelotti has urged his players to focus on Galatasaray rather than look ahead to their domestic meeting with Monaco. He also expects the home supporters to provide an advantage at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

For Lille, containing Osimhen will require more than close marking. They must defend collectively, limit the spaces available for Galatasaray’s transitions and remain organised when pushing forward.

With both teams seeking their first points in the competition, the side that manages the tiny details effectively could secure all three points at the Decathlon Arena.
