How Victor Osimhen and 2 other Super Eagles stars fit Mourinho’s Real Madrid blueprint

Published on by

Victor Osimhen could become the first Super Eagles player to feature for Spanish giants Real Madrid if a number of things align this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

One of the most critical factor to that dream becoming a reality is the personality of the head coach at the Santiago Bernabéu and with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, the first piece may already be in place.

Real Madrid have officially welcomed back Jose Mourinho, ending a 13-year wait since his first spell in charge of the Spanish giants.

The Portuguese tactician has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2029 and is expected to begin work when pre-season preparations start on July 13.

Mourinho’s first stint in Madrid between 2010 and 2013 delivered major success. He guided Real Madrid to the 2011/12 La Liga title with a record 100 points, while also lifting the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. His side became famous for its defensive organisation, ruthless counter-attacks and relentless winning mentality.

The challenge awaiting him this time is significant. Real Madrid finished behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona in La Liga and have gone two seasons without a major trophy. To restore the club’s dominance, Mourinho will need players who fit his demanding tactical philosophy.

Among current Nigerian stars, three Super Eagles players stand out as ideal fits for the Mourinho blueprint: Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Calvin Bassey.

Victor Osimhen – The ruthless striker Mourinho loves

Already linked to Real Madrid, Victor Osimhen possesses many of the qualities Mourinho has always demanded from his central forwards. Throughout his career, Mourinho has built successful teams around powerful strikers capable of leading the line alone. At Chelsea, he relied on Didier Drogba, while Diego Costa played a similar role during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid clearly are in the market for a centre-forward and Osimhen fits the Mourinho mould perfectly. The Nigerian striker combines explosive pace with physical strength, allowing him to battle defenders, win aerial duels and stretch opposition backlines. His ability to attack space behind defenders would make him a major weapon in Mourinho’s trademark counter-attacking system.

The Galatasaray forward is also known for his relentless pressing and defensive work from the front. Mourinho has always valued forwards willing to sacrifice themselves for the team, and Osimhen’s intensity without the ball would make him an ideal focal point for Real Madrid’s attack.

Wilfred Ndidi – The midfield shield

Wilfred Ndidi would provide exactly the type of midfield protection Mourinho has relied on throughout his greatest successes. During Real Madrid’s title-winning years under Mourinho, players such as Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira provided balance, discipline and defensive cover. At Chelsea, the legendary Claude Makélélé performed a similar role.

Ndidi’s greatest strengths are his tackling, interceptions and positional awareness. The Super Eagles midfielder, linked with a move to Manchester United, excels at breaking up opposition attacks before they become dangerous, allowing more creative teammates to focus on attacking responsibilities.

Mourinho’s teams often depend on one midfielder staying disciplined while others move forward. Ndidi’s willingness to do the defensive work, protect the back four and cover large areas of the pitch would make him a valuable asset in the Portuguese coach’s system.

His ball-winning ability could give Real Madrid the defensive foundation needed to compete with Europe’s strongest attacking teams.

Calvin Bassey – The defensive warrior

Calvin Bassey may be the most Mourinho-style defender currently playing for Nigeria. The Fulham star combines strength, pace and versatility, qualities Mourinho has consistently valued throughout his managerial career. Bassey is comfortable operating as a centre-back or left-back, giving coaches multiple tactical options during matches.

One of Mourinho’s key defensive principles is ensuring his team remains difficult to break down in high-pressure situations. Bassey thrives in exactly those circumstances. He is strong in one-on-one duels, aggressive in challenges and capable of making crucial blocks inside the penalty area.

His versatility resembles that of former Mourinho favourites such as Pepe and William Gallas, who regularly switched between centre-back and left-back at Chelsea. Bassey also offers the defensive reliability Mourinho often preferred from players like Fábio Coentrão and Álvaro Arbeloa during important matches at Real Madrid.

With Mourinho’s teams often switching shapes depending on the opponent, Bassey’s ability to slot into different defensive roles would be invaluable. His physical dominance and defensive-first mentality make him the type of player Mourinho has trusted throughout his career.

Mourinho is a coach whose success has always been built on organisation, discipline and tactical commitment, and Osimhen, Ndidi and Bassey appear tailor-made for the demands of his second spell at Real Madrid.
