Victor Osimhen transfer: Why Super Eagles striker will not join Barcelona

Published on by

Victor Osimhen has been warned that a transfer to Barcelona is not a realistic destination because he does not fit the Catalans’ tactical philosophy, Afrik Foot reports.

The Nigerian has been one of the most talked-about players in European football over the past three summers, and with good reason.

His numbers have kept him on the radar of big clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Yet amid all the speculation, a move to the Camp Nou now appears to be completely out of reach.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have shifted their attention toward Julian Alvarez, with the Argentine’s desire to leave Atletico Madrid opening a pathway for the Catalan giants to pursue a technically refined forward who fits their possession-heavy system naturally.

That development has effectively moved Osimhen down Barcelona’s priority list, and the assessment of former Fenerbahce striker Serdar Dursun, delivered on the Cup Diary programme on Spor Smart, explains why that outcome wasn’t far-fetched.

What Dursun said about Osimhen’s Barcelona prospects

Dursun was direct in his verdict, claiming Osimhen’s relentless pressing and dependence on his physicality isn’t a factor that Barcelona have always considered in their search for strikers.

“I don’t think Osimhen can play for Barcelona,” the former Turkish international said in quotes revealed by Fanatik.

“Osimhen is a talented player, but he doesn’t have a clean technique.”

Barcelona’s Tiki Taka football philosophy, built across generations of coaching and squad construction on the principles of short, intricate passing, positional play, high pressing coordination and technical precision in confined spaces, places demands on centre-forwards outside their goalscoring attribute.

The striker in Barcelona’s attack is required to hold the ball under pressure, play into tight spaces, link combinations in the final third and participate in a collective pressing structure.

On the flip side, Osimhen himself is a press trigger. He hunts the ball from the referee’s whistle, and while that is an admirable trait, it doesn’t fit a Barca team that presses collectively.

Osimhen’s strengths are magnificent but differently distributed. He is explosive off the shoulder of defenders and lethal when the ball arrives in the penalty area.

Those are the qualities that have made him one of the most feared strikers in European football, but they are not the qualities that define the archetypal Barcelona number nine.

Why Victor Osimhen will not join Barcelona

The first reason is tactical, and Dursun has articulated it clearly enough. Barcelona under Hansi Flick, who signed a contract extension at the club in 2026, have built their attacking system around technically astute players who can operate as false nines, drop into midfield channels and contribute to the intricate combinations that aid in build-up.

Robert Lewandowski, whatever his limitations at 37, understood that system. His movement, first touch and ability to hold the ball in tight spaces made him a functional fit for what Flick demanded.

Osimhen is not built for those specific demands. His greatest moments come when the pitch opens up, when space exists behind defensive lines, when he can use his explosive pace and physical power to attack in behind.

Barcelona’s positional game does not create those conditions consistently; it creates the opposite, and a move could leave both the club and the striker equally frustrated.

The second reason is financial. Barcelona’s economic situation, despite improvements from last season, still requires them to be creative and careful in their major signings.

Galatasaray have placed a valuation of around €150 million on Osimhen. With Barcelona already pursuing Alvarez as their primary attacking addition, the financial case for pursuing Osimhen does not hold up.

The third reason is Osimhen himself. The Super Eagles captain has spent this summer expressing his commitment to Galatasaray, speaking warmly about the project and the atmosphere, and has not publicly indicated a desire to push for the Camp Nou specifically.

Barcelona may have admired Osimhen from a distance. The market, the tactics and the technical question have collectively ensured that distance is where the admiration will remain.
