WAFCON 2026: Two players who can replace suspended Super Falcons against Egypt

The Super Falcons head into their decisive 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash against Egypt without two key players, forcing head coach Justine Madugu into changes at both ends of the pitch, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria will be without central defender Oluwatosin Demehin after her red card in the hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, while midfielder Jennifer Echegini is suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in the tournament.

Despite the setbacks, Madugu remains confident his squad possesses enough quality to cope with the absences as Nigeria chase a place in the quarter-finals.

1. Toni Payne can fill Jennifer Echegini’s midfield role

Speaking ahead of the Egypt clash, Madugu strongly hinted that Toni Payne is ready to step into midfield following Echegini’s suspension.

The newly signed Inter Milan midfielder offers experience, composure in possession and the passing ability to link defence and attack.

Unlike Echegini, who thrives with her driving runs into the final third, Payne brings greater ball retention and creativity, qualities that could prove useful against an Egyptian side expected to defend deep.

Madugu suggested Payne is fully prepared for the responsibility.

“All the players in the team are good enough, they all have different qualities and have their strengths and weaknesses,” the Super Falcons coach said in his pre-match presser.

“She is good to go, she has an opportunity and hopefully she will also be part of the team, considering the fact that we have players that would not be in the team tomorrow.”

Payne’s inclusion would also allow captain Rasheedat Ajibade to operate closer to Asisat Oshoala, or out wide on the flank, giving Nigeria additional creativity in the final third.

2. Shukurat Oladipo is favourite to replace Demehin

At the back, Shukurat Oladipo appears the natural candidate to replace Demehin in central defence.

The youngster has impressed whenever called upon and possesses the pace and recovery ability needed to complement veteran Osinachi Ohale.

Nigeria’s biggest concern against Malawi came from defensive lapses during transitions, but Oladipo’s mobility could help the Super Falcons cope better if Egypt attempt to counterattack.

Her inclusion would also preserve Nigeria’s preferred defensive structure instead of forcing positional adjustments elsewhere.

Madugu backs squad depth

The Super Falcons coach stressed that every selection decision is based on tactical demands rather than reputation.

“Sometimes selection of players is dependent on what you see or analyse about the opposition.

“When you come up with your own strategy, who will be able to do this? This is what we have seen of the opposition, there are their strengths and weaknesses.”

Madugu also dismissed suggestions that sentiment influences his decisions, insisting every player in camp has earned their place.

Big opportunity for Nigeria’s fringe players

With qualification still hanging in the balance, Wednesday’s clash offers Payne and Oladipo the chance to stake their claim for more minutes in the starting lineup.

Nigeria need victory to avoid relying on complicated qualification permutations, meaning whoever replaces the suspended duo will immediately come under pressure to perform, given that a place at the 2027 Women’s FIFA World Cup is at stake.

If Payne can control the midfield and Oladipo can help keep Egypt’s attack quiet, the Super Falcons should remain on course for another deep run at the WAFCON 2026 in Morocco.
