“Hit us hard” – Werder Bremen chief issues update on Super Eagles star’s injury

Published on by

Werder Bremen technical director Peter Niemeyer has stated that Super Eagles defender Felix Agu is expected to return to action soon, despite his latest injury scare, Afrik-Foot reports.

It has been a grueling campaign for Agu, who has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch due to a string of unfortunate injuries.

Last October, the 26-year-old suffered a serious syndesmosis ligament (ankle) injury during a Bundesliga match against St. Pauli, which required surgery.

The layoff not only ruled him out for 13 club matches but also forced him to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with Nigeria.

Agu finally made his long-awaited return in early February, appearing as a substitute against Freiburg.

To show his importance to the squad, head coach Daniel Thioune immediately handed him a starting role in the following match against Bayern Munich. However, his comeback hit another snag last weekend.

Agu was named in the starting XI for the reverse fixture against St. Pauli at the Millerntor-Stadion but was forced to withdraw during the pre-match warm-up. Medical checks later confirmed a muscular injury in his adductor area.

Werder Bremen’s Niemeyer Provides Update on Recovery Timeline

The timing of this latest setback is particularly frustrating for Peter Niemeyer and the Werder Bremen hierarchy. The club is currently in a precarious position, sitting 17th in the Bundesliga table—just one point away from the relegation play-off spot.

Despite the blow, Niemeyer offered a reassuring update, noting that this layoff will be far shorter than Agu’s previous ankle surgery recovery.

”Felix’s injury is a blow for us, of course. But it’s not a matter of months,” Niemeyer explained. “We don’t believe we put too much strain on him after his long break. We brought him back carefully and with caution.”

Agu’s adductor problem casts doubt on his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming international window in March. Even if he regains fitness before the break, Werder Bremen may prefer to keep him in Germany to focus on their survival bid.

With 11 games remaining, Agu’s fitness will be crucial to Bremen’s hopes of avoiding the drop. Given his history of recurring injuries, the defender will be desperate to prove his reliability and help keep the Green-Whites in the top flight.
