Wilfred Igor has gone from an unfamiliar name in Nigerian football to a regular midfielder in Norway, and now he has his first invitation to the Super Eagles.

The 21-year-old Kristiansund midfielder is part of Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on October 6, 2026.

Chelle selected a separate squad for the Russia game from the group chosen for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Russia squad contains established players such as Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, Moses Simon and Stanley Nwabali, alongside several players yet to make their senior Nigeria debuts. Igor is among the new midfield options.

His invitation comes at an important point in his development. Igor is no longer simply a young Nigerian prospect trying to break into European football. Igor George Wilfred was born in Nigeria on February 20, 2005. He is 21 years old and plays mainly as a defensive midfielder, but also versatile enough to be deployed as a central midfielder. He is right-footed and wears No. 20 for Kristiansund.

His first senior invitation from Nigeria comes after more than three seasons in Norwegian football. Kristiansund brought him to Norway in August 2023 on loan from Nigerian club Hype Buzz, before making the move permanent in January 2024.

Wilfred Igor was born on February 20, 2005, making him 21 years old in September 2026.

He was 18 when Kristiansund signed him on loan in August 2023 and 19 when the Norwegian club made the move permanent in January 2024. He turned 20 in February 2025 and 21 in February 2026.

From Nigeria to Norway: How Wilfred Igor built his career

Kristiansund announced Igor’s arrival in August 2023, describing him as a central midfielder from Nigeria.
