Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is reportedly being pursued by French giants Olympique Marseille but the transfer risks falling through due to his high wage demands.
Ndidi has been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer after enjoying a successful campaign with Leicester last season. The Nigeria international was one of the Foxes’ main driving forces as they secured promotion to the Premier League.
The 27-year-old was particularly key in the latter stages of the campaign after recovering from an injury that had kept him out for three months and went on to finish the season with six goals and six assists as Enzo Maresca’s side won the Championship.
The midfielder’s future at the club, however, remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire at the end of June. While Leicester have confirmed talks over fresh terms, no agreement has been reached yet as the clock ticks towards the expiration of Ndidi’s contract.
Olympique Marseille unable to afford Wilfred Ndidi’s wages
The lack of clarity has led to the Nigerian being linked with several clubs across Europe, including Everton, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Barcelona.
However, the latest report suggests Marseille have also made contact with the midfielder’s camp and are interested in bringing him to the Stade Velodrome. Newly appointed Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi is said to be a huge admirer of Wilfred Ndidi and would want to have him in his squad ahead of the next season.
According to La Provence, however, the transfer hinges on Ndidi lowering his wage demands. The former Genk anchorman is said to be currently earning £75,000 per week, as per Salary Sport, but Marseille are unwilling to meet such a demand.
The Ligue 1 giants are, by all accounts, keen to cut their wage bill after failing to secure European football following their disappointing eighth-place finish last season.
