Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi could be set for a return to the Premier League, barely a year after leaving England for Turkey, Afrik-Foot reports.
Manchester United have now been mentioned alongside newly promoted Hull City as two clubs interested in signing the experienced Nigerian midfielder from Turkish side Beşiktaş.
Turkish outlet TF recently claimed that Hull City were planning to strengthen their midfield after winning promotion back to the Premier League. The report said club owner Acun Ilıcalı wanted proven top-flight players to help the Tigers avoid relegation next season, with Ndidi emerging as one of the club’s main targets.
However, sources close to the situation have insisted that Hull City have not opened formal talks with either Beşiktaş or the player’s representatives. The club is still putting together its transfer plans and has not made an official move.
Hull are believed to be considering several midfield options before deciding which players to pursue. While Ndidi’s experience, physical strength and ability to win the ball make him an attractive option, discussions remain at the planning stage.
The 29-year-old moved to Beşiktaş after ending his long stay in England, where he built an impressive reputation during his years with Leicester City. Across his Premier League career, Ndidi made more than 220 appearances and established himself as one of the league’s most reliable defensive midfielders.
Reports have also suggested that Beşiktaş would be willing to sell the Nigerian international for around €8 million if the right offer arrives.
Factors that could decide Ndidi’s next destination
Manchester United and Hull City may both offer Ndidi a route back to English football, but the two clubs present very different opportunities.
The biggest advantage for Manchester United is financial power. The Red Devils have one of the highest revenues in world football and would have little difficulty meeting Beşiktaş’s asking price. They are also capable of offering wages that would comfortably exceed what Hull City could afford under their current financial structure.
Hull City, on the other hand, may not be able to match United financially, even with the backing of owner Acun Ilıcalı. The club must carefully manage its spending after earning promotion and avoid breaking financial regulations while building a squad capable of surviving in the Premier League.
Playing time could become another major factor in Ndidi’s decision. At Hull City, the Nigerian would almost certainly become an automatic starter. The club wants an experienced defensive midfielder to protect the back four, and Ndidi would likely play an important leadership role every week.
Manchester United offer a different challenge. The midfielder would have to compete with several established players for a place in the starting lineup. While his experience and defensive qualities would be valuable, he could spend more time as a rotation player than as a guaranteed starter.
Sporting ambition is another point to consider. Manchester United continue to compete for domestic trophies and places in European competitions. Joining the Old Trafford club would give Ndidi the chance to fight for Premier League silverware and play in the Champions League.
Hull City’s immediate target would be very different. After returning to the Premier League, the club’s first aim is to avoid relegation and build a team capable of staying in the division. Although that project may not bring immediate trophies, it could give Ndidi the opportunity to become an influential player in the English top-tier again.
Finally, there is the attraction of each club’s identity. Hull owner Acun Ilıcalı is said to be personally involved in the club’s recruitment plans and could offer Ndidi the chance to become the face of an ambitious rebuilding project. His leadership and Premier League experience would make him a key figure for the Tigers.
Manchester United, meanwhile, remain the biggest club in England and among the most recognisable in world football. The chance to wear the famous red shirt, play at Old Trafford and become only the second Super Eagles star in history to play for United could prove difficult for Ndidi to ignore.
At the moment, though, no official bid has been submitted by either club. But if both Manchester United and Hull City eventually make concrete offers, Ndidi will have an important decision to make as he considers the next chapter of his career.
