Yohanna: AIK explains Nigerian youngster’s absence against Vasteras

Published on by

Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna was a notable absentee for AIK in their 1-1 draw against Vasteras in the Swedish Allsvenskan on Sunday, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 18-year-old has been one of the most talked-about talents in Europe in recent months and has continued to attract interest from several clubs across the major leagues. He has scored five goals and provided four assists across all competitions for AIK this season, including five goal contributions in seven league appearances.

However, Yohanna was substituted at halftime during the club’s clash against Djurgården last week after providing the assist for his side’s opening goal and was absent once again on Sunday as AIK’s winless run stretched to five matches following the draw against Vasteras.

Marcus Baggesen opened the scoring for the home side on the stroke of halftime, but AIK restored parity just before the break when Aron Csongvai scored directly from a free kick to send both sides into halftime level.

Despite creating several chances in the second half, neither side could find a winner as the game ended 1-1. AIK remain in 10th place on the league standings with nine points from their opening eight league matches and are already 10 points off top spot.

AIK clarify reason for Zadok Yohanna’s absence against Vasteras

Highly-rated Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna was forced off at halftime with an injury problem against Djurgården in AIK’s previous match. However, head coach José Riveiro had earlier played down injury concerns and revealed that the forward would be available for the clash against Västerås.

It therefore came as a surprise when the 18-year-old was left out of the matchday squad and was later spotted watching the game from the stands among the supporters. However, the Swedish club have now confirmed that the youngster missed the game due to injury.

“He is undergoing rehabilitation. There is nothing more to say”, AIK’s head of recruitment, Miika Takkula said post-match.

The Nigerian talent has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. With the summer transfer window approaching, doubts remain over whether he will continue at the club beyond this season.

However, AIK head coach José Riveiro played down speculation surrounding the youngster’s future.

“I’m not sure about that”, Riveiro remarked.

Unity Cup 2026: Eric Chelle dealt Yohanna injury blow

Nigeria are set to defend their Unity Cup crown in London later this month in a four-nation tournament featuring Jamaica, Zimbabwe and India.

AIK winger Zadok Yohanna had been tipped to earn a place in the Super Eagles squad, especially with head coach Eric Chelle keen on giving opportunities to fresh faces during the tournament.

However, the youngster’s recent injury setback may have hampered his chances of receiving a call-up and could prove to be a major blow for the Super Eagles, who could miss out on a very talented forward, although his opportunity with the national team is expected to come if he continues his impressive development.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old continues to attract interest from several top clubs, with Rennes and Real Madrid reportedly joining the race for his signature.

With the Swedish league set to enter a short spring break after two more matches, speculation is growing that Yohanna may have already played his final game for the club.
