AFCON: Broos points out a key aspect Bafana Bafana have improved

Published on by

Veteran tactician Hugo Broos is back in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Bafana Bafana.

The 73-year-old is the first coach in the country’s history to help South Africa to back-to-back AFCON participation. In the 2023 edition, they came as underdogs but still managed to go home with bronze.

Two years later, Broos’ men are among the favourites owing to the way they have been playing. As a matter of fact, they tasted no defeat in the qualifiers and are expected to make out of Group B that is made up of Egypt, Angola and Zimbabwe as well.

The Belgian insists his team has improved as opposed to the previous assignment where they had to recover from a poor start.

Where have Bafana Bafana improved?

“In the first game at last AFCON against Mali, we were confronted with something we didn’t know, power,” Broos told the media.

“We were not prepared for what Mali did to us in the second half. They took us on power, but you’ve seen the progression of Bafana Bafana in the last two years.

“If you have a game against Nigeria in mind a few months ago. You can see that now we can also play with power; we can resist power.

“So, that means we don’t have to be afraid of this AFCON. Even with…I’ve heard that some countries are saying South Africa can win AFCON.

“So, now we are, maybe, one of the many favourites because if you compare teams in this edition to the last, you can see this one will be much tougher,” the former Cameroon coach concluded.
