Allende – What Sundowns want to fix in Champions League this season

Published on by Nkosiyabuya Sithole

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Marcelo Allende, has outlined the team's focus for the upcoming CAF Champions League season: to improve their goal-scoring ability.

The South African giants, who last lifted the continental trophy in 2016, have consistently fallen short in recent years, reaching the semifinals or quarterfinals.

Last season, they were eliminated by Esperance de Tunis in the semifinals.

Allende believes that scoring more goals in every match will be crucial, especially given the significance of away goals in the knockout stages.

He is confident that this improved attacking prowess will propel Sundowns to the final.

ALLENDE ON WHAT SUNDOWNS MUST DO TO REACH FINAL

“For the past two seasons, we were eliminated in the semi-finals and in both situations, it was more on losing with the away goal rule,” said Allende.

“Against Wydad, they scored two goals (at Loftus Stadium), which was a huge thing to be eliminated in the semi-finals. Last season, it was also a situation of the away goal rule, but we understand the dynamics of this.

“The more goals you score, the better you are to put yourself in the final. The team is capable of competing and winning.

“We have to get ready and bounce back because Sundowns is a big team. We could not win the final, but our objective remains the same, which is to win everything. We are going to bounce back and come back stronger.”
